BUILDA A FIGURE
Build-A-Figure (BAF) is an innovative action figure distribution model pioneered by Toy Biz and expanded by Hasbro across major lines like Marvel Legends and Star Wars. By including distinct figure components across an entire product wave, the system enables collectors to assemble oversized, deluxe characters that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive or too large for standard single-card packaging.
Cronologia
Panoramica

The Build-A-Figure (BAF) concept is a specialized figure distribution system primarily used in Hasbro's 6-inch Marvel Legends line, as well as select Star Wars (Build-A-Droid / Droid Factory) and Transformers lines.
Originally introduced by Toy Biz in 2005 before Hasbro acquired the Marvel license in 2007, the format packs individual body parts—such as limbs, torsos, heads, or wings—with each carded figure in a wave.
By acquiring all figures in a wave, collectors obtain all necessary components to construct a larger deluxe character, often reaching 16 to 18 inches in height, that would be physically too large or expensive to distribute in standard single-figure retail packaging.
Storia

Marvel Legends originated in 2002 under Toy Biz as a spinoff of the Spider-Man Classics line. Toy Biz revolutionized the line in 2005 (Series 9) by launching the Build-A-Figure concept with a 16-inch Galactus, followed by giant characters like Sentinel and Apocalypse.
After acquiring the Marvel license in 2007, Hasbro standardized the concept, debuting with Annihilus in Wave 1 and later producing massive sculpts like Fin Fang Foom and store-exclusive BAFs like Red Hulk and Ares. In 2008, Hasbro adapted the mechanic to 3.75-inch Star Wars figures via the Build-A-Droid scheme in The Legacy Collection.
Following a brief hiatus, Hasbro relaunched the line in 2012 as 'The Return of Marvel Legends' (featuring Terrax and Arnim Zola) and rebranded it in 2014 to the 'Infinite Series', directly integrating Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) releases. Over the years, BAF waves extended across MCU blockbusters, Disney+ series, Gamerverse titles, and classic comic storylines, continuing through 2024–2026 releases like Blackheart, The Void, and Alpha Flight's Box.

Collezionismo
The Build-A-Figure format creates a compelling dynamic for action figure collectors, driving complete wave purchases to acquire all necessary pieces for an oversized character.
Fully assembled BAFs—especially vintage Toy Biz giants like Galactus and Sentinel or retailer-exclusive Hasbro BAFs like Red Hulk and Ares—regularly command high prices on the secondary market. Furthermore, chase figures and character variants (such as the Red Skull chase in Series 5 or the Destroyer variant for Thorbuster Iron Man) add another layer of scarcity and completionist appeal.

Some Marvel Legends variant releases substituted a completely different character, such as Genis-Vell serving as a variant for Captain Marvel.
