Cold Weather Assault Stormtroopers, commonly known as Snowtroopers, are specialized shock troops trained to operate in extreme cold environments where standard stormtrooper armor would fail.

Serving under General Maximilian Veers' elite Blizzard Force and Darth Vader's personal contingent, Snowtroopers spearheaded the Imperial ground offensive against the Rebel Alliance's Echo Base, crushing Rebel defenses and securing the stronghold. Following the fall of the Galactic Empire, remnants of these cold-weather forces continued to fight across the galaxy under warlords such as Commander Barro. Decades later, the First Order revitalized the cold-assault doctrine, deploying modernized Snowtroopers to secure harsh installations like Starkiller Base and maintain control on frozen worlds like Kijimi.

The Imperial Snowtrooper program is the direct operational descendant of the Grand Army of the Republic's Clone Cold Assault Troopers, who fought during the Clone Wars on frigid worlds like Orto Plutonia, Rhen Var, and Toola. Following the rise of the Empire, clone units transitioned into recruited human stormtroopers, adapting specialized cold-weather technology for Imperial expansion.
From a visual and design perspective, Snowtroopers were created for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) by concept artists Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston alongside costume designer John Mollo. McQuarrie designed the iconic visual scheme featuring the fabric face cowl, hood, and thermal backpack, while Johnston developed alternative concept drawings with samurai-esque visors.
McQuarrie's early visual concepts were later used to design the clone precursors seen in The Clone Wars. Operating under warlords like Commander Barro with reduced supply chains, many troopers modified their uniforms by removing the external white cloth helmet hood to reveal the unmasked rebreather structure beneath and equipped modified blasters like the DLT-20A with attached glowrods. Decades later, the First Order redesigned the snowtrooper aesthetic, introducing sleek, modernized white plating, internal environmental heating units, glare-reducing slit visors, and unit pauldrons for officers.
