Biography

Dr. Susan "Sue" Storm-Richards is an altruistic, highly skilled adventurer and core co-leader of the Fantastic Four. Mutated by cosmic rays during an experimental space flight, she acquired the ability to turn invisible and project powerful psionic force fields.

Alongside her husband Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), her brother Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing), Sue has dedicated her life to defending Earth from cosmic and dimensional threats through science and teamwork.

Beyond her superhero activities, Sue is the mother of Franklin and Valeria Richards and serves as the stabilizing presence of her family. Throughout her career, she has held diverse roles including regent queen of the Uhari, high school substitute teacher, actress, archaeologist with a doctorate, and secret intelligence operative for S.H.I.E.L.D.

LO SAPEVI?Sue Storm holds the historical milestone of being the very first female superhero created by Marvel Comics during the Silver Age of Comic Books.

Origin & Backstory

Born in Glenville, Long Island, Susan Storm and her younger brother Johnny suffered a tragic childhood when their mother Mary died in a car crash. Their father, Dr.

Franklin Storm, was unable to save her, descended into alcoholism and gambling, and was imprisoned after killing a loan shark in self-defense.

Raised by their Aunt Marygay Jewel Dinkins at a boarding house, a teenage Sue met and fell in love with boarder Reed Richards, who was completing his doctorate at Empire State University. Years later, while engaged to Reed, Sue and Johnny joined Reed and test pilot Ben Grimm aboard the experimental rocket Marvel-1 to study cosmic radiation. Passing through an unshielded solar flare in space, the radiation drastically mutated all four crew members. Upon crashing back to Earth, Sue discovered her new invisibility powers, prompting the group to form the Fantastic Four.

LO SAPEVI?Before her superhero career began, Sue moved to Hollywood to pursue acting and earned a Doctorate in Archaeology.

Evolution

Introduced in 1961 as the "Invisible Girl," Sue Storm was initially written with basic defensive invisibility powers framed within traditional 1960s domestic tropes. In 1964 (Fantastic Four #22), creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby dramatically expanded her power set by giving her psionic force fields, force blasts, and the ability to turn external objects invisible.

A major character turn occurred during John Byrne's 1985 run (Fantastic Four #284), when she renamed herself the "Invisible Woman," reflecting a far more confident, powerful, and assertive heroine. Modern storylines have showcased her independent moral direction, such as defecting to Captain America's resistance in Civil War (2006) and undertaking covert espionage missions for S.H.I.E.L.D. in her 2019 solo comic miniseries.

LO SAPEVI?In an early adventure, Reed Richards defeated an invading Skrull fleet by showing them photos of giant comic book monsters and hypnotizing the remaining Skrull impostors into thinking they were dairy cows.
