Biografia

Dr. Finkelstein is a pale, frail mad scientist who resides in a large observatory tower in Halloween Town alongside his hunchbacked assistant Igor and his living ragdoll creation, Sally. Confined to an electric metal wheelchair operated via hand levers, Finkelstein is characterized by his duckbill-like mouth, goggle-covered eyes, and a prominent hinged skull cap that he flips open to scratch his brain whenever he encounters a complex problem.

He acts as an overprotective, possessive father figure to Sally, keeping her under lock and key under the guise of protecting her from the world, which drives Sally to repeatedly poison his soup with Deadly Nightshade to slip away. Despite his grouchy and controlling demeanor toward Sally, Dr. Finkelstein is eager to assist Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King.

He maintains a friendly working relationship with Jack, opening his laboratory to lend scientific tools, microscopes, and equipment. During Jack's Christmas project, Finkelstein designs and electrically animates the flying skeletal reindeer required for Jack's sleigh. Frustrated by Sally's persistent disobedience and escapes, Finkelstein eventually constructs a new female companion named Jewel, placing a portion of his own brain inside her to ensure her obedience. In later print media, his relationship with Sally and his standing in Halloween Town are drastically recontextualized as secret truths about his past experiments emerge.

Storia

Originally introduced in the 1993 film, Dr. Finkelstein's true backstory was expanded in the novel Long Live the Pumpkin Queen.

Years before the events of the movie, Finkelstein learned of Dream Sand from an ancient book in his lab and traveled to Dream Town to study it. There, he discovered a young ragdoll child named Sally.

Having failed numerous times to create a daughter of his own, Finkelstein abducted Sally, administered a forgetting potion, and hid the doorway to Dream Town. He raised her in Halloween Town as his own creation to earn scientific respect and prove his brilliance. Upon the exposure of his crimes, Jack Skellington sentenced him to 100 years of community service in Dream Town, where he was assigned to herd counting-sheep.

LO SAPEVI?Originally voiced by Oscar-nominated actor William Hickey in 1993, voice actor Jess Harnell took over the role after Hickey passed away in 1997.

Evoluzione

Dr. Finkelstein was originally introduced in the 1993 film as a classic, grouchy stop-motion mad scientist voiced by Oscar nominee William Hickey. Following Hickey's passing in 1997, voice actor Jess Harnell assumed the role across video games and media spin-offs.

Throughout video games like Kingdom Hearts and Oogie's Revenge, Finkelstein was portrayed as an eccentric, helpful ally to Jack Skellington, creating artificial hearts and weaponry. In expanded print media—most notably Zero's Journey and Shea Ernshaw's Long Live the Pumpkin Queen—his character narrative expanded significantly, shifting from a possessive creator to a deeply flawed scientist whose abduction of Sally from Dream Town leads to exposure, exile, and a century of community service.

LO SAPEVI?He created his wife, Jewel, using a portion of his own brain to ensure she would not disobey him like Sally.
