Biografia

Trap Jaw is one of the most iconic Evil Warriors serving Skeletor in the Masters of the Universe franchise.

Characterized by his cybernetic steel lower jaw and a robotic right arm equipped with interchangeable weapon attachments, he operates as Skeletor's chief mechanic, armorer, and resident 'wizard of weapons.' Despite his infamous reputation for dim-wittedness in classic animated portrayals, Trap Jaw remains one of Snake Mountain's most lethal and frequently deployed frontline operatives, often paired alongside Beast Man or Tri-Klops.

Throughout various continuity depictions, Trap Jaw is a formidable cyborg combatant whose metal jaw can bite through nearly any material, including magical weapons. When consuming the rare Eternian element known as Eternium, he temporarily gains immense physical strength that rivals He-Man himself. Beyond his frontline duties in Skeletor's army, Trap Jaw has occasionally operated independently from his base in the Sands of Time, forming alliances with rogue figures like Lord Masque or joining techno-cult factions in apocalyptic eras.

LO SAPEVI?Mattel designer Colin Bailey was inspired by Jaws from the James Bond film franchise when creating Trap Jaw, borrowing elements from an unreleased Big Jim toy figure named Iron Jaw.

Storia

The origin of Trap Jaw varies across the distinct eras of Eternian lore, yet all trace his tragic transformation into a cybernetic warrior. In the original 1982 Mattel series bible by Michael Halperin and early 1983 mini-comics, he was introduced as an interdimensional criminal from the dimension of Infinita.

Brought to Eternia through Skeletor's interdimensional portal, Trap Jaw seized the power of Castle Grayskull, forcing He-Man and Skeletor to temporarily unite their Sword of Power halves to defeat him before Skeletor claimed him as a servant.

In the 2002 animated reboot and MV Creations comics, his origin was expanded into the backstory of Kronis, a blue-skinned space pirate and general in Keldor's army. Disillusioned with Skeletor's leadership following Keldor's defeat, Kronis raised an army to challenge Skeletor. Skeletor brutally defeated Kronis, shattering his lower jaw and tearing off his right arm. Skeletor then ordered Tri-Klops to cybernetically rebuild Kronis with a steel jaw and prosthetic limbs, creating Trap Jaw. In the 2021 CGI series, Kronis was reimagined as a former Man-at-Arms of Eternos whose jaw was broken by Duncan during Keldor's coup.

LO SAPEVI?In order to reduce animation costs during the 1983 Filmation cartoon, Trap Jaw was designed asymmetrically, which occasionally resulted in his cybernetic arm appearing on the wrong side of his body when animation cells were flipped.

Evoluzione

Trap Jaw's character design and narrative background have undergone significant evolution since his creation by Mattel designer Colin Bailey. Inspired by James Bond's villain Jaws and adapted from an unreleased Big Jim concept figure named Iron Jaw, Trap Jaw's early appearance in 1983 minicomics featured light green skin, furry boots, and silver mechanical parts. This was quickly standardized in toys and the Filmation animated series into his iconic look: blue skin, green face, pink chest armor, and dark metallic cybernetics.

Narratively, Trap Jaw evolved from a generic interdimensional criminal in the 1980s into a tragic, vengeance-driven warlord named Kronis in the 2002 animated reboot. The 2002 series gave him a grounded origin as Keldor's disgraced general whose body was shattered during an attempted mutiny against Skeletor. Modern iterations continue to refine his character: Kevin Smith's Revelation transformed him into a cyber-cult fanatic worshipping Motherboard, while the 2021 CGI series framed him as a disgraced former Man-at-Arms. Finally, his 2026 live-action adaptation retains his classic visual identity while upgrading his cybernetic arm with real-time dynamic shape-shifting transformation technology.

LO SAPEVI?When Trap Jaw ingests the rare Eternian element known as Eternium, he temporarily gains super-strength that equals He-Man's power.

Da Collezione

For action figure collectors, Trap Jaw is widely considered one of the holy grails and defining highlights of the entire Masters of the Universe franchise. The original 1983 Wave 2 Mattel action figure remains an iconic masterpiece of vintage toy engineering, featuring a functional hinged steel jaw, a ring-topped helmet for ziplining along string, and a belt designed to store three interchangeable right-arm weapon attachments (hook, laser cannon, and claw). Mint-on-card (MOC) vintage 1983 figures command significant value among high-end vintage collectors.

Over the decades, Mattel has continuously re-released and updated Trap Jaw across multiple lines. Highly sought-after modern releases include the 2002 'Four Horsemen' sculpted figure, the highly articulated Masters of the Universe Classics edition, and the retro-styled MOTU Origins line, which includes rare 'Fan Favorite' reissues and mini-comic color variants. In 2026, Mattel expanded the brand with the MOTU Chronicles line, producing a 6.5-inch movie-accurate action figure featuring 30 points of articulation and a head sculpt matching actor Sam C. Wilson from the live-action feature film.

LO SAPEVI?Trap Jaw's original minicomic design featured light green skin and furry boots instead of his classic blue skin and mechanical boots.
