DR. MARTIN BRENNER
Dr. Martin Brenner, known as 'Papa' to his subjects, is the cold and calculating scientist who spearheaded the experiments at Hawkins National Laboratory. His obsession with the Upside Down and human potential triggered the events that nearly destroyed the town of Hawkins.
Cronologia
Biografia
Dr. Martin Brenner is a high-ranking scientist and the primary catalyst for the supernatural crises in Hawkins, Indiana.
Serving as the Director of Operations at Hawkins National Laboratory, he orchestrated Project MKUltra and subsequent initiatives designed to harness psychokinetic abilities for government use.
Brenner is defined by his clinical detachment and his ability to manipulate those under his care, particularly the children he raised as test subjects in the 'Rainbow Room.' Though he presents himself as a paternal figure, Brenner’s motivations are rooted in a deep-seated obsession with other dimensions, a drive that often blinds him to the ethical horrors of his work. Despite his antagonistic nature, he views himself as a necessary protector, believing that only he can truly understand and guide individuals with powers, specifically Eleven and the dangerous Subject 001.
Storia
Born in 1931, Martin Brenner’s life was forever changed by his father, a Captain in the US Navy.
In 1943, his father’s ship, the USS Eldridge, was involved in the 'Project Rainbow' (Philadelphia Experiment), which allegedly saw the vessel travel to a realm known as the Abyss or Dimension X.
As the sole survivor, Brenner's father returned in a vegetative state, leaving Martin with a lifelong obsession to understand the realm that claimed his father's sanity. By the 1950s, Brenner was conducting his own research in Nevada before moving to Hawkins to establish a permanent facility for his trans-dimensional and mind-control experiments.
Evoluzione
Throughout the series, Dr. Brenner evolves from a standard shadowy government villain into a tragic, if still monstrous, figure. In Season 1, he is the cold hunter, but by Season 4, his actions in Project Nina suggest a twisted attempt at redemption.
He believes he is the only one who can 'save' Eleven by helping her regain her powers, yet his refusal to acknowledge her agency remains his fatal flaw. His ultimate death in the desert—unforgiven by his 'daughter'—marks the end of his attempt to play God. The final season further deepens his tragedy by revealing that his entire life was a desperate attempt to reconnect with the mystery that took his father in 1943.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Dr. Brenner is a 'grail' character precisely because he is less frequently produced than the core group of kids. The definitive piece for any Brenner fan is the Funko Pop! #515, which captures his iconic silver hair and suit.
There is also a highly sought-after variant featuring blood spatter from the lab massacre. Higher-end collectors look toward the 1/6 scale figures from brands like ThreeZero, which occasionally feature Brenner in lab-themed dioramas. Because Matthew Modine’s likeness is so distinct, these figures have held their value well, especially after the character's definitive end in the Season 5 finale.

Brenner survived the 1983 Demogorgon attack but was left with significant facial scarring.
