This appearance represents Toad as featured in Illumination and Nintendo's 2023 animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, this version of Toad serves as Mario's loyal, brave, and energetic guide through the Mushroom Kingdom following the plumber's unexpected arrival.
La Scena
This appearance centers on Toad's initial encounter with Mario upon his arrival in the Mushroom Forest. After Mario tumbles through a warp pipe, Toad playfully terrifies him by screaming not to touch a perfectly safe mushroom. To convince the bewildered plumber that he is not dreaming, Toad hits Mario with his walking stick. Upon hearing that Mario's brother Luigi landed in the Dark Lands—a dangerous territory ruled by the evil Bowser—Toad immediately steps up as a guide. He leads Mario through the bustling streets of Toad Town, loudly shouting to clear a path so Mario can request aid from Princess Peach at her hill-topped castle. Toad subsequently joins Mario and Peach on their hazardous journey to the Jungle Kingdom to secure an alliance with the Kongs.
Significato
Toad is the critical first contact Mario makes in the Mushroom Kingdom, acting as both world guide and narrative catalyst. By informing Mario of Bowser's threat and Luigi's dire situation in the Dark Lands, Toad establishes the hero's core motivation and the film's overarching stakes. His willingness to guide Mario to Princess Peach bridges the gap between the lost plumber and the kingdom's ruler, launching their grand adventure across the realms.
Design
While maintaining his classic video game silhouette—with a red-spotted white mushroom cap and blue vest—this animated cinematic iteration adds detailed features. He wears white pants styled with front laces, defined stubby legs, and carries a small travel backpack along with a wooden walking stick. Styled with adventurous cues reminiscent of Captain Toad (and later receiving a red bandana in the sequel), this version blends an adorable appearance with a brave persona and a biting wit.
