SARUMAN
Saruman the White is the former head of the White Council and leader of the Istari, tasked with guiding Middle-earth against the shadow of Sauron. Once the wisest of the Wizards, his descent into pride and obsession with the One Ring led him to betray his mission and attempt to forge his own empire from the tower of Orthanc.
Cronologia
Biografia
Saruman, initially known as Saruman the White, was the leader of the Order of Wizards (Istari) sent to Middle-earth in the year 1000 of the Third Age. As the chief of the order and the head of the White Council, he was the primary authority on the lore of the Rings of Power.
For centuries, he was regarded as the greatest protector of the Free Peoples, settling in the ancient Gondorian fortress of Isengard to maintain a watch over the West. However, his extensive research into the Enemy's arts led to a deep-seated corruption; he began to envy the power of Sauron and sought the One Ring for himself to rule Middle-earth in his own image.
His fall was marked by the industrialization of Isengard, where he replaced natural beauty with machinery and war-foundries to breed the Uruk-hai. By the time of the War of the Ring, he had officially declared himself 'Saruman of Many Colours,' shedding his white mantle to signify his new, fractured allegiance. Though he functioned as a puppet of Sauron through the Palantír of Orthanc, Saruman remained a faithless vassal, constantly plotting to usurp his dark master. His influence was eventually broken by the Ents' attack on Isengard and Gandalf’s divine intervention, leading to his pathetic final days as a petty criminal in the Shire under the pseudonym Sharkey.
Storia
Before taking the form of an old man in Middle-earth, Saruman was a Maia of Valinor named Curumo. He served Aulë the Smith, the same Vala who originally taught Mairon (who would become Sauron), which explains Saruman’s innate affinity for craftsmanship and engineering.
When the Valar decided to send emissaries to Middle-earth around T.A. 1000 to combat the rising shadow of Sauron, Curumo was the first to volunteer. Despite his status as the leader, he harbored an early jealousy of Gandalf (Olórin), specifically because the Varda suggested Gandalf was the wisest.
Upon arriving at the Grey Havens, Saruman's resentment deepened when Círdan the Shipwright gifted the Red Ring, Narya, to Gandalf instead of him. For over a millennium, Saruman wandered into the East before returning to the West to lead the White Council and eventually claim the keys of Orthanc from the Steward of Gondor in T.A. 2759.
Evoluzione
Saruman’s journey is a tragic arc of the 'fallen sage.' In the beginning, he was the purest embodiment of order and wisdom, respected by Elves and Men alike. His decline began subtly with the study of Ring-lore, shifting from a desire to protect Middle-earth to a desire to organize it by force.
This intellectual corruption manifested physically and environmentally; his white robes were replaced by shifting, kaleidoscopic colors, and the gardens of Isengard were paved over with industry. By the end of his life, having lost his magic, his staff, and his dignity, he evolved into 'Sharkey,' a bitter and spiteful ruffian leader. This final stage shows a character who, having failed to match the grandeur of Sauron, settled for the petty destruction of the things Gandalf loved, proving that his pride survived even when his power did not.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Saruman is a cornerstone of any Middle-earth display, with the late Sir Christopher Lee’s likeness being the definitive standard. Weta Workshop, the studio that worked on the films, produces the most sought-after pieces, including high-end 1/6 scale statues and environment pieces like the Tower of Orthanc. Their 'Saruman the White' at the pinnacle of Orthanc is considered a 'grail' for many.
Sideshow Collectibles has also produced iconic Premium Format figures that capture the texture of his layered robes and the menace of his staff. Another brand to watch is Iron Studios, known for dynamic 1/10 scale statues that are more space-efficient but highly detailed. A unique niche for collectors involves the 'Saruman of Many Colours' variants, which are rarer than the standard white-robed versions. Recently, the 'Trials of Saruman' RPG releases from 2026 have sparked a renewed interest in gaming miniatures and licensed artwork featuring the Wizard during his early days as a guardian.

After his fall, Saruman crafted his own 'lesser ring' and explicitly referred to himself as 'Saruman Ring-maker' during his confrontation with Gandalf.
