Cronologia
Biografia
Master Yen Sid is an authoritative and severe-looking sorcerer characterized by his long grey hair, bushy eyebrows, and a split beard. He is almost always seen wearing his iconic blue conical hat, decorated with yellow stars and a crescent moon—a symbol of his immense magical power. Residing in the Mysterious Tower, Yen Sid serves as a beacon of wisdom for those struggling against the darkness.
Despite his stern exterior and frequent frowning, he possesses a deep, encouraging belief in his apprentices, particularly King Mickey, whom he has guided from a reckless trainee to a true Keyblade Master. As a retired Keyblade Master, his role in the cosmic balance is primarily that of a strategist and teacher. He holds vast knowledge regarding the nature of the Heart, the Heartless, the Nobodies, and the Unversed.
While he has stepped back from active combat, his presence remains imposing; he is the one who oversees the Mark of Mastery exams and coordinates the resistance against Master Xehanort's various incarnations. He is highly respected by all Keyblade wielders, including veterans like Aqua and Terra, who seek his counsel during times of crisis. His character represents the bridge between ancient Keyblade traditions and the modern struggle to protect the Light.
Storia
The origins of Yen Sid trace back to the 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' segment of the 1940 film Fantasia, where he was the formidable master of Mickey Mouse. Within the Kingdom Hearts timeline, his history is intertwined with other legendary figures like Master Eraqus and Master Xehanort, who were once his peers.
Long before the events of the main series, Yen Sid was an active Keyblade Master who eventually chose to retire, taking up residence in his secluded tower to monitor the stars and the balance of the worlds. His backstory reveals a man who has watched the rise and fall of many threats, including the deviation of his former associate, Xehanort.
He was the one who trained Mickey Mouse in the magical arts and eventually the way of the Keyblade, witnessing Mickey's transition from a student who struggled with the Star Shard to a Master in his own right. In other realities, such as the Epic Mickey universe, he is recognized as the creator of the 'Wasteland,' a world built for forgotten characters using his magical paintbrush, further establishing his role as a grand architect of magic across the Disney multiverse.
Evoluzione
Yen Sid’s evolution is one of the most unique in Disney history. He began as a silent, formidable archetype in Fantasia—a figure of pure discipline meant to serve as a foil to Mickey's mischief. For decades, he remained an unnamed enigma, but his integration into the Kingdom Hearts series transformed him into a deeply layered character with a rich personal history.
No longer just a 'sorcerer,' he became a 'Retired Keyblade Master,' a title that added martial weight to his magical prowess. His role transitioned from a simple master to a galactic commander, coordinating multi-world defenses and managing the growth of the series' main protagonists. Recent years have seen him expand into the digital and tabletop gaming space, most notably in Disney Lorcana, where his identity as a 'Powerful Sorcerer' is celebrated through high-value card art, and in the Epic Mickey series, where his role as a creator of worlds is fully explored.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Master Yen Sid has recently become a 'grail' target due to his debut in the Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game. Specifically, the 'Yen Sid - Powerful Sorcerer' card from the 'Ursula's Return' set (May 2024) features a highly sought-after 'Enchanted' alternate art version that has seen significant value on the secondary market.
Beyond cards, Yen Sid is frequently featured in high-end Kingdom Hearts figure lines produced by Square Enix, often appearing as a companion piece to King Mickey sets or as part of the Mysterious Tower dioramas. With the 2024 release of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, merchandise featuring his classic Fantasia look has seen a resurgence, making him a staple for both Disney purists and Kingdom Hearts completionists.
His name was established in the original 1940 Fantasia screenplay but was not actually spoken on-screen for many years.
