Cronologia
Biografia
Max Mayfield is a cornerstone of the Hawkins friend group, characterized by her fiery personality and initial skepticism toward the supernatural. Introduced in 1984 as a California transplant, she quickly proved her worth to Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas through her mechanical aptitude and fearlessness.
Despite her tough exterior, Max often carried the weight of a turbulent home life, particularly her volatile relationship with her stepbrother, Billy Hargrove. Her role in the group—affectionately dubbed the 'Zoomer'—represents both the speed of her skateboarding and her quick-thinking nature in high-stakes combat. Throughout the series, Max’s narrative is defined by emotional growth and survival.
After the tragic events at Starcourt Mall, she grappled with intense survivor’s guilt, which made her the primary target for the entity known as Vecna in 1986. Her narrow escape from the 'Mind Lair' remains one of the most iconic moments in Hawkins history. Even when physically broken and left in a comatose state, her consciousness remained a vital weapon against the Upside Down. By the end of the saga, her journey is one of physical and spiritual reclamation, culminating in her graduation from Hawkins High School in 1989.
Storia
Born in July 1971 in San Diego, California, Max Mayfield’s early years were shaped by a close bond with her father, Sam, through whom she developed an interest in science and horror films.
A natural athlete, she spent much of her childhood skateboarding and surfing in Venice Beach. Her life was upended when her parents divorced, leading her mother, Susan, to marry Neil Hargrove.
This union introduced Max to a cycle of abuse and hostility from her new stepfather and stepbrother, Billy. Following a violent incident where Billy broke her best friend Nate's arm, the family relocated to Hawkins, Indiana, in October 1984—a move Max deeply resented. In Hawkins, she sought refuge in the Palace Arcade, where she beat Dustin Henderson's high score in Dig Dug, unknowingly setting the stage for her introduction to the Party.
Evoluzione
Max’s character arc is a journey from isolation to belonging. When she first arrives in Hawkins, she is guarded and fiercely independent, using her skateboard as both a tool for escape and a barrier against others. Her early days are defined by a refusal to believe in the supernatural, viewing the Party’s secrecy as a joke. However, the horror of the Upside Down quickly forces her to mature. By Season 3, she transitions into a mentor role for Eleven, teaching her about self-reliance and fashion outside of Mike's influence.
The most dramatic shift occurs post-Season 3. The death of Billy leaves her shattered, leading to a period of deep depression and social withdrawal in Season 4. This vulnerability makes her the emotional heart of the struggle against Vecna. Her final evolution in Season 5 sees her moving from a victim of circumstance to an active, internal warrior, fighting from within Vecna's own mindscape. Her story concludes with a physical triumph, as she re-learns to navigate the world in 1989, proving that her spirit remained unbroken despite her physical trials.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Max Mayfield is a high-priority figure, particularly due to the 'Kate Bush effect' following Season 4. Funko remains the most prolific producer, with the 'Max at the Mall' (Season 3) and the 'Floating Max' (Season 4) being essential pieces. The latter, depicting her levitation during the Vecna encounter, has become a grail for many.
Higher-end collectors look toward ThreeZero for 1/6 scale figures that capture Sadie Sink's likeness with incredible precision, often featuring her signature blue jacket and Walkman. McFarlane Toys produced popular 7-inch articulated figures during the show's early run, including a version of Max in her Michael Myers Halloween costume which remains highly sought after on the secondary market. Bandai has also entered the space with their Hawkins High line, offering stylized versions of her 1986 appearance. Value trends suggest that figures featuring her Walkman or skateboarding accessories hold the highest long-term appeal, as they represent the core essence of her character.
Max is the first person in Hawkins to successfully steer a vehicle while being significantly underage, avoiding a collision with the boys' bikes.
