Cronologia
Panoramica
Mega Construx represents Mattel's specialized construction toy brand, engineered to offer standard stud-and-tube brick compatibility while targeting both young builders and adult collectors. Originally originating from Canadian manufacturer Ritvik Holdings under the Mega Bloks banner, the line was acquired by Mattel in 2014 for approximately $460 million.
In 2017, Mattel established the 'Mega Construx' sub-brand specifically to differentiate detailed, collector-focused building sets and licensed lines from preschool-oriented construction toys. What truly sets Mega Construx apart in the building toy marketplace is its hyper-detailed micro-action figure format, featuring up to 16 points of articulation, removable armor, and custom weapon molds.
Operating across standard building scale, the brand bridges the gap between traditional brick-building construction and poseable action figure collecting. Over its history, Mega Construx has adapted legendary entertainment, video game, and pop-culture franchises into detailed brick playsets. These include flagship properties such as Microsoft's Halo, Call of Duty, Masters of the Universe, Pokémon, Fallout, Game of Thrones, Destiny, and Hot Wheels. In recent years, Mattel streamlined the brand under a purple MEGA logo before initiating a transition toward the 'Mattel Brick Shop' identity.
Storia
The roots of Mega Construx date back to 1967 when Victor and Rita Bertrand founded Ritvik Holdings in Montreal, Quebec. In 1984, Ritvik introduced Mega Bloks, large interlocking bricks aimed at toddlers. Seeing the potential in direct competition with LEGO, Ritvik launched Micro Mega Bloks in 1991, offering standard-sized, stud-compatible bricks.
After successfully defeating LEGO in a landmark patent lawsuit over brick design, the company rebranded as Mega Bloks Inc. in 2002, scoring a massive original hit with its fantasy Dragons line from 2002 to 2009. In 2006, the corporate name shifted to Mega Brands Inc. as the company broadened its portfolio.
A pivotal moment occurred in 2009 when Mega Brands partnered with Microsoft to create Halo construction sets, debuting its signature 16-articulation-point micro-figure system. Mattel purchased Mega Brands in May 2014 for $460 million, formally launching the Mega Construx sub-brand in February 2017 for builders aged 4 and up, alongside high-end collector sets. Subsequent years saw massive expansions into Masters of the Universe, Game of Thrones, and Fallout. In 2022, Mattel simplified the branding to a unified purple MEGA logo, setting the stage for a 2025–2026 transition into the Mattel Brick Shop banner.

Collezionismo
For action figure and construction collectors, Mega Construx occupies a unique niche in the toy market. Unlike standard block minifigures, Mega's micro-action figures feature 16 points of articulation, swappable armor pieces, and highly accurate miniature weapons, allowing for realistic pop-culture dioramas and dynamic action posing. This micro-figure architecture has turned licenses like Halo, Call of Duty, Masters of the Universe, and Fallout into major collector favorites. The line's value trends on the secondary market are strongly driven by retired licenses and short-run adult collector sets.
Discontinued themes such as Destiny, Star Trek, Assassin's Creed, and Black Series individual releases (like Hellboy, Kratos, or Skyrim's Dragonborn) command significant premiums among enthusiasts. Furthermore, Mattel's announcement that its Pokémon construction license ends on December 31, 2025, is driving increased demand for legacy Pokémon builds before rights transfer to LEGO in 2026. As Mattel phases out the 'Mega Construx' branding in favor of 'Mattel Brick Shop' between 2025 and 2026, original orange-badged Mega Construx boxed sets and sealed convention releases are increasingly sought after as historic artifacts of the line.
