Panoramica
Produced by NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association), the Defenders of the Earth action figure line is a premium 7-inch scale collection created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the 1986 animated series.
Targeted at adult collectors and classic animation fans, the line brings iconic King Features Syndicate characters—Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Lothar, and Ming the Merciless—into the modern detailed action figure era.
Positioned as a high-end nostalgic release, NECA engineered each figure with premium sculpts, modern articulation, and soft goods details. The packaging directly honors the original 1986 Galoob toy line through retro-styled window box artwork.
Storia
NECA officially debuted prototypes for the Defenders of the Earth line at the New York Toy Fair in February 2020.
In December 2020, NECA launched the line with an exclusive 30-day early release window at Walmart before moving to full global retail distribution in early 2021.
Wave 1 kicked off with core heroes Flash Gordon and The Phantom alongside main antagonist Ming the Merciless. Late in 2021, NECA announced a companion sub-line titled King Features: The Original Superheroes, which re-utilized the Defenders molds formatted with classic comic-strip paint schemes. Wave 2 was announced in March 2022 and shipped between late 2022 and 2023, adding Mandrake the Magician, Lothar, and Garax to complete the core heroic roster and villain forces from the cartoon.

Collezionismo
For collectors of 1980s animation and classic comic properties, NECA's Defenders of the Earth line offers a complete roster of the core adult heroes and main villains across just two main waves.
The figures provide double display value: loose collectors benefit from modern articulation and soft-goods tailoring, while mint-in-box collectors appreciate the packaging decorated with nostalgia-driven Galoob homage art. Furthermore, the line connects directly into NECA's broader King Features ecosystem, allowing collectors to seamlessly cross-display figures alongside the King Features: The Original Superheroes series and NECA's 1980 Flash Gordon movie collection.
Marvel legend Stan Lee wrote the lyrics to the 1986 animated series theme song.
