Cronologia
Overview
Created by Kazuki Takahashi in 1996, Yu-Gi-Oh! (translated as "Game King" or "King of Games") originated as a manga series in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.
What began as a narrative focused on psychological gaming challenges quickly transformed into an expansive global franchise centered on its iconic card game, Duel Monsters (originally known as Magic & Wizards in the manga). Over its nearly 30-year history, Yu-Gi-Oh!
has expanded into 10 television anime series totaling over 1,000 episodes, four animated movies, multiple manga spin-offs, over 50 video games published by Konami, and the official tabletop Trading Card Game (TCG/OCG). From its 1996 origins to the conclusion of Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!! in March 2025 and 30th-anniversary celebrations in 2026, Yu-Gi-Oh! remains one of the most successful pop culture IPs in history.
Origins
Yu-Gi-Oh! debuted on September 30, 1996, created by Kazuki Takahashi and published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The original story centers on Yugi Muto, a timid high school boy who solves the ancient Egyptian Millennium Puzzle.
Upon completing it, Yugi unlocks a heroic, dark alter-ego known as Dark Yugi (later revealed to be Pharaoh Atem). In early story arcs, the narrative followed Dark Yugi enforcing penal "Shadow Games" against villains using various games.
During these early chapters, Takahashi introduced a fictional card game called Magic & Wizards. The game gained immense popularity among readers, prompting Takahashi and his editors to shift the story permanently toward card dueling starting with the Duelist Kingdom arc in volume 8. This transition led to Toei Animation's 1998 anime, Studio Gallop's global hit Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters in 2000, and Konami's official tabletop card game launch in 1999.

Collecting
At the core of the Yu-Gi-Oh! collecting community is Konami's official tabletop card game, launched as the Official Card Game (OCG) in Japan in 1999 and the Trading Card Game (TCG) internationally in 2002. For serious collectors, iconic original cards such as Yugi's Dark Magician, Seto Kaiba's Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and Joey Wheeler's Red-Eyes Black Dragon serve as premier grail items.
Collectors actively pursue vintage sealed booster packs, first-edition prints, secret rare variants, and limited promotional releases. Digital collecting has also expanded through platforms like Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links. Surrounding the franchise's 30th anniversary (1996–2026), events like the "YU-GI-OH! ART WORKS" exhibition and retro compilations such as the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection highlight the enduring value and visual legacy of Kazuki Takahashi's iconic creation.

Original author Kazuki Takahashi personally wrote the storyline for the 2016 feature film "Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions" as a canonical sequel to his original manga.
