Cronologia
Panoramica
Created by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher began in 1986 with a short story submitted to the fantasy magazine Fantastyka.
Over nearly four decades, the franchise has expanded into ten prose books—including short story collections, a main five-novel saga, standalone prequels, and an upcoming novel targeted for 2027—alongside numerous comic series from Dark Horse Comics.
Across the screen, the IP encompasses early 2000s Polish film and television adaptations, a live-action Netflix universe spanning multiple seasons and spin-off prequels, and animated feature films. On the interactive front, CD Projekt RED transformed the property into a global video game giant featuring three mainline RPGs, standalone card games, and future Unreal Engine 5 projects.
Origini
The Witcher franchise originated in December 1986 when Andrzej Sapkowski entered his short story 'Wiedźmin' into a contest hosted by the Polish magazine Fantastyka, earning third place and enthusiastic reader acclaim.
Following this success, Sapkowski wrote further stories compiled into collections like Sword of Destiny (1992) and The Last Wish (1993), establishing the character of Geralt of Rivia, the Law of Surprise, and his relationship with Yennefer.
In 1994, Sapkowski published Blood of Elves, launching the central five-novel Witcher Saga. Early media adaptations began in Poland during the 1990s with comic books by Maciej Parowski and Bogusław Polch, followed by Marek Brodzki's 2001 feature film Wiedźmin (The Hexer) and its 2002 13-episode television series adaptation.

Collezionismo
The Witcher collecting community revolves around both physical gaming releases and dark fantasy physical memorabilia.
CD Projekt RED's physical Collector's Editions are prized grails among video game collectors, featuring high-demand items such as wearable wolf medallion necklaces, hardcover artbooks, bestiaries, physical Gwent card decks, cloth world maps, original soundtrack CDs composed by Adam Skorupa and Paweł Błaszczak, and promotional T-shirts.
Beyond gaming, book collectors actively pursue Polish first editions of Sapkowski's early 1990s publications, out-of-print 1990s Polish comic issues, physical tabletop games like The Witcher Adventure Game, and limited Dark Horse comic variants.

A console adaptation of the first game titled The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was planned for 2009 before being suspended.
