Origini
The Super Mario franchise originated in arcades in 1981 with Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto's landmark creation, Donkey Kong. Mario made his debut under the original name 'Jumpman', depicted as a carpenter attempting to rescue his girlfriend. He subsequently appeared as an antagonist in 1982's Donkey Kong Jr.
before starring alongside his brother Luigi in the 1983 arcade title Mario Bros., which established his profession as a plumber. The franchise's main platforming identity was forged in 1985 with the release of Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Famicom.
Designed by Miyamoto, the game introduced the Mushroom Kingdom setting, Princess Toadstool (Peach), and Bowser (King Koopa). Featuring 32 stages, power-ups like the Magic Mushroom and Fire Flower, and 2D side-scrolling mechanics, Super Mario Bros. popularized the platforming genre and set the foundation for decades of media expansion.
