Cronologia
Panoramica
Street Fighter (commonly abbreviated as SF) is a seminal fighting game franchise created and published by Capcom. Debuting in arcades on August 30, 1987 under directors Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, the series was later shaped by key producers including Yoshiki Okamoto, Noritaka Funamizu, and Yoshinori Ono.
As of June 2024, the series has sold over 55 million video game units worldwide, solidifying its position as one of the highest-grossing fighting game franchises in history. The central storyline follows global martial artists competing in the World Warrior tournament, battling criminal organizations like Shadaloo led by dictator M. Bison, secret societies like the Illuminati led by Gill, and supernatural forces such as the Satsui no Hado.
Across its history, Street Fighter has expanded far beyond arcades into multiple mainline installments (Street Fighter I through 6, the Alpha prequel series, III, IV, V, and the 3D EX series), major crossover fighting games (Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom vs. SNK, Street Fighter X Tekken), feature films (such as the 1994 animated feature, 1994 live-action film, 2009 live-action film, and the 2026 Legendary/Paramount live-action film directed by Kitao Sakurai), TV series (Street Fighter II V, 1995 USA animated series, Resurrection), and extensive comic books published by UDON Entertainment and classic manga creators.
Origini
The franchise made its debut in arcades in August 1987 with the original Street Fighter, designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto. The game featured solitary protagonist Ryu traveling across five countries (United States, Japan, China, England, and Thailand) to defeat ten opponents, with a second player able to join as Ryu's rival Ken Masters.
The title pioneered the six-button attack layout and special move inputs for the Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. Early cabinet runs utilized pressure-sensitive pneumatic pads to determine attack strength, though these quickly damaged and were replaced with standard buttons. The original game was ported to home systems, including the TurboGrafx-CD as Fighting Street.
In March 1991, Capcom released Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, designed by Akira Nishitani (Nin-Nin) and Akira Yasuda (Akiman) on Capcom's CPS arcade hardware. Capcom initially expected modest performance comparable to Final Fight and Mercs, but Street Fighter II exploded into an unprecedented phenomenon. By introducing an eight-character roster of selectable fighters with distinct combat styles, hidden special attacks, throw mechanics, and emergent combo strings, Street Fighter II established the foundational mechanics of modern 1v1 fighting games and launched a multi-million dollar global franchise.
