As of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, the franchise features 1,025 documented species divided into nine generations. Over its history, the franchise has expanded beyond video games to encompass more than 20 animated movies, a live-action film, multiple TV series spanning dozens of seasons, manga, and the globally popular Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Origini
The franchise debuted in Japan in 1996 with Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green for the Game Boy, which introduced the original 151 Pokémon species.
When localized for international markets in 1998, the titles became Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version.
The concept was paired with an anime series in 1997 following protagonist Ash Ketchum and his partner Pikachu, as well as the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which launched in Japan in 1996 before expanding globally in 1999.

Collezionismo
Pokémon represents one of the most active markets in modern pop-culture collecting.
The cornerstone of the hobby is the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), launched in 1996 in Japan and 1999 worldwide, where rare first-edition cards and vintage promotional cards command significant market values. Beyond TCG, video game collectors seek vintage sealed Game Boy cartridges, GameCube software such as Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and high-grade collectible merchandise across all nine generations.

Anime head writer Takeshi Shudō stated that real-world animals had gone extinct in the Pokémon universe.
