Overview
My Hero Academia is a major superhero manga and anime franchise created by writer and illustrator Kōhei Horikoshi.
The main manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from July 7, 2014, to August 5, 2024, spanning 42 tankōbon volumes and exceeding 100 million copies in worldwide circulation by April 2024.
Produced primarily by Studio Bones, the main TV anime adaptation debuted in 2016 and concluded with its eighth season in late 2025, followed by the special epilogue episode 'My Hero Academia: More' in May 2026. The franchise also encompasses four anime feature films (Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, World Heroes' Mission, and You're Next), multiple spin-off manga series (such as Vigilantes and Team-Up Missions), light novels, seven video game adaptations, and an upcoming live-action film adaptation by Netflix and Legendary Entertainment.
Origins
Before launching the series, Kōhei Horikoshi tested early concepts in a winter 2008 Akamaru Jump one-shot titled 'My Hero'.
After two of his subsequent Weekly Shōnen Jump series—Oumagadoki Zoo (2010–2011) and Barrage (2012)—were cancelled, Horikoshi felt depleted of ideas. When granted a third chance, he chose to revisit and build upon his 'My Hero' prototype.
Development on the concept began in June 2013 under editor Hitoshi Koike. Horikoshi drew thematic and visual inspiration from Western comic books and sci-fi films like Spider-Man, X-Men, and Star Wars, alongside classic Japanese shonen manga and tokusatsu franchises including Naruto, Dragon Ball, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider. The official manga series began serialization a year later in July 2014.

Collecting
In the collecting sphere, My Hero Academia offers prized print and gaming items accumulated across its decade of publication. High-value printed media collectibles include the limited-edition theatrical booklets distributed at movie premieres—Volume Origin, Volume Rising, Volume World Heroes, and Volume Next (which houses the exclusive 2024 prequel one-shot 'A Piece of Cake').
Manga collectors focus on completing the 42 main tankōbon volumes, particularly Volume 42 with its 38 bonus epilogue pages, alongside official reference databooks such as Ultra Archive, Ultra Analysis, and Ultra Age. In interactive media, console game collectors track Bandai Namco's 3D arena fighting entries My Hero One's Justice and My Hero One's Justice 2, while digital collectors engage with mobile titles like Smash Tap, The Strongest Hero, and Ultra Impact.

Kōhei Horikoshi developed the series after two of his previous Weekly Shōnen Jump manga were cancelled.
