Cronologia
Panoramica
Founded in January 1973 in New York City by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, KISS is a pioneering superhero-styled rock band and multimedia intellectual property.
Known for their comic book alter-egos and elaborate live theatrics—including fire breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics—the franchise has sold over 103 million albums worldwide and earned 30 gold albums.
Beyond music, KISS evolved into a pop-culture juggernaut across comic books, television specials, feature films, video games, and licensed collectibles. Following decades of lineup changes and an unmasked era in the 1980s, the original members reunited in 1996 for the top-grossing tour of the year. The physical band played its final live concert on December 2, 2023, at Madison Square Garden, officially transferring stage performances to digital avatars created by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). In April 2024, Swedish firm Pophouse Entertainment acquired the KISS music catalog, brand name, trademarks, and likenesses for over $300 million, with plans for a $200 million avatar show in Las Vegas.
Origini
The origins of KISS trace back to Wicked Lester, a New York City rock group led by Gene Simmons (born Chaim Witz) and Paul Stanley (born Stanley Harvey Eisen). After their shelved Epic Records album, Simmons and Stanley abandoned Wicked Lester in 1972 to pursue a harder rock sound. They recruited drummer Peter Criss (George Peter John Criscuola) after spotting his advertisement in Rolling Stone.
In late 1972, lead guitarist Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley) auditioned while wearing one red and one orange sneaker, completing the classic lineup. Stanley created the band's name during a drive in New York, and Frehley designed the iconic logo featuring lightning-bolt letters.
Taking inspiration from comic books and horror films, the members adopted superhero personas with distinct makeup designs: The Demon (Simmons), The Starchild (Stanley), The Spaceman (Frehley), and The Catman (Criss). KISS played their debut show on January 30, 1973, to just three attendees at the Popcorn Club in Queens. Managed by Bill Aucoin, they became the first act signed to Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records in late 1973, building a massive fanbase that exploded into national stardom with their 1975 live album, Alive!.

Collezionismo
KISS transformed band merchandising into an unprecedented commercial force. Between 1977 and 1979 alone, worldwide retail and concert merchandise sales reached an estimated $100 million. Driven by the six-figure membership of the KISS Army fan club, early items included Mego-style action figures, 'Kiss Your Face' makeup kits, Halloween masks, Pez dispensers, board games, and physical pinball machines produced by Bally in 1979.
Among comic collectibles, the 1977 Marvel Comics Super Special #1 remains legendary, as the band members mixed their own real blood into the red ink vats at the printing factory. High-value memorabilia also includes KISStory (1995), a massive band-published coffee-table book, and modern high-end pinball tables from Stern Pinball released in 2015. For collectors, the market spans vintage 1970s novelties to modern releases from publishers like Image, Dark Horse, IDW, and Dynamite. The franchise's lasting commercial influence was solidified in April 2024 when Pophouse Entertainment purchased the entire KISS catalog, trademarks, and face-paint designs for over $300 million.
Curiosità
Ace Frehley arrived at his initial KISS audition wearing mismatched sneakers—one red and one orange. To print the 1977 Marvel Comics Super Special #1, the four band members drew real blood and mixed it into the red ink vats.
KISS performed their debut concert on January 30, 1973, at the Popcorn Club in Queens before an audience of only three people. Because the lightning-bolt letters in the logo resembled the Nazi SS symbol, German releases used a modified logo with backwards 'ZZ' shapes. At their final concert in 2023, the band handed off the stage to 8-foot-tall digital avatars designed by Industrial Light & Magic.
