Cronologia
Panoramica
Created by British author J. K. Rowling, the Harry Potter franchise (officially branded as the Wizarding World) is one of the highest-grossing and most globally impactful media franchises in history. The IP originated with a seven-book literary series published between 1997 and 2007. Warner Bros.
Pictures adapted the core books into an eight-part blockbuster film saga released from 2001 to 2011, followed by the three-film prequel series Fantastic Beasts (2016–2022).
Beyond literature and cinema, the franchise includes the canonical stage play sequel Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2016), companion textbooks, and an extensive catalogue of video games ranging from early console movie tie-ins to the open-world RPG Hogwarts Legacy (2023). The physical presence of the franchise is anchored by Universal Destinations & Experiences theme park lands in Orlando, Japan, Hollywood, and Beijing, including the Ministry of Magic expansion opened at Universal Epic Universe in 2025. The franchise is currently expanding into television with a multi-season HBO reboot series scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026.
Origini
The origins of the Harry Potter franchise trace back to J. K. Rowling's preliminary manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Before achieving publication, Rowling's initial submission was rejected by 12 different publishers before being accepted by Bloomsbury in London.
The first book was officially published in the United Kingdom on June 26, 1997, followed by a United States release by Scholastic on September 1, 1998, under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
The book series achieved rapid international popularity, leading to publishing agreements across dozens of foreign publishers including Gallimard Jeunesse in France, Carlsen Verlag in Germany, and Salani Editore in Italy. Following this literary success, Warner Bros. secured the film adaptation rights, launching a cinematic enterprise in 2001. The original book series ran for ten years, concluding on July 21, 2007, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which sold over 12 million copies in the U.S. alone upon release. Coincidentally, the film adaptations also ran for a ten-year span from 2001 to 2011.
