Dementors are dark, wraith-like non-beings in the Harry Potter universe created by author J.K. Rowling as a metaphor for clinical depression. Gliding and cloaked, these scabbed entities feed on human happiness, hope, and positive memories, forcing victims to relive their worst experiences. Having served as guards of Azkaban prison for centuries before defecting to Lord Voldemort, they were ultimately banished permanently from the prison system by Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt.
