Martin with the publication of his flagship fantasy novel A Game of Thrones in 1996, the franchise has evolved into one of the most influential pop-culture intellectual properties in history. HBO adapted the main narrative into the landmark television series Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons and 73 episodes between 2011 and 2019.
The overarching literary universe comprises five main novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, alongside three standalone novellas, two comprehensive companion history books, and numerous graphic novel adaptations.
The television branch has expanded into a multi-series universe with live-action prequels including House of the Dragon (premiering in 2022) and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (premiering in 2026), alongside three additional spin-off series currently in development. Expanding beyond television, Warner Bros. has officially scheduled the franchise's first theatrical feature film, Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, for June 2029, building upon a gaming legacy that includes eleven official video game titles across PC, console, and mobile platforms.
Origini
The origins of the franchise trace back to 1996 with the release of George R.R. Martin's novel A Game of Thrones, the opening volume of his planned epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire.
Set primarily on the continent of Westeros, Martin developed a rich history where Aegon Targaryen united seven feuding kingdoms using dragons three centuries before the events of the main story.
Seventeen years prior to the narrative, a civil war led by Lord Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, Jon Arryn, and Hoster Tully overthrew the Targaryen Mad King, forcing the surviving heirs Viserys and Daenerys into exile in Essos. Following the success of the debut novel, Martin expanded the world with the novella The Hedge Knight in 1998, followed by sequel novels A Clash of Kings (1998) and A Storm of Swords (2000). The combination of high-stakes political intrigue, realistic character mortality, and deeply developed lore established the foundation for HBO's television adaptation in 2011, transforming the book series into a global multimedia phenomenon.
