Cronologia
Panoramica
Fortnite is a premier cross-platform media and video game franchise created by Epic Games. First announced in 2011 and officially launched in 2017 with Save the World and Battle Royale, the IP has evolved from a survival sandbox builder into one of the largest entertainment ecosystems in modern gaming history.
Beyond its core video game titles—which span nine major game modes including Battle Royale, Zero Build, LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, Fortnite Festival, Reload, Fortnite OG, Ballistic, and Blitz Royale—the franchise encompasses an extensive multimedia portfolio.
Fortnite's transmedia footprint includes major comic book miniseries produced in partnership with DC Comics and Marvel Comics, official art and reference books published by Insight Editions and Hachette, in-game animated film festivals like Short Nite, and an ongoing $1.5 billion persistent entertainment universe developed with The Walt Disney Company.
Origini
The concept for Fortnite was born during an internal Epic Games Game Jam following the completion of Gears of War 3 in 2011. The original vision combined Minecraft-inspired building mechanics with third-person cooperative shooter gameplay set in a world where players scavenged resources, built forts, and survived against waves of monstrous Husks.
Epic Games officially unveiled Fortnite at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards. Development was fraught with delays and challenges. Epic Games director Rod Fergusson even considered cancelling the title before leaving the studio in 2012. Originally built on Unreal Engine 3, the game transitioned to Unreal Engine 4 prior to its public release.
Closed Alpha online tests began in late 2014 under strict non-disclosure agreements, leaving behind very little public footage from that era. After years of refinement, Fortnite entered Head Start Early Access on July 21, 2017, followed by a wider Early Access launch on July 25, 2017. Shortly after, Epic developed a standalone 100-player Battle Royale mode, releasing it for free on September 26, 2017, which reshaped the entire trajectory of the franchise.

Collezionismo
For physical and digital collectors, Fortnite offers a unique crossover between gaming memorabilia, print media, and physical toys. The physical collecting market is highlighted by Epic Games' long-term partnership with The LEGO Group, producing physical LEGO Fortnite sets and minifigures mirroring in-game counterparts like those featured in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life and Odyssey.
In print, comic book collectors highly prize the physical crossover issues published by DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Series such as Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point (2021) and Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War (2022) became instant collector items due to their canonical lore additions and redeemable in-game cosmetic codes included with first-print copies.
Additionally, official hardcovers published by Insight Editions and Hachette—such as the Fortnite: Official Visual Dictionary and beginner art guides—serve as core references for fans. On the digital side, grail status belongs to early 2017 Founder's Packs, rare Chapter 1 Battle Pass cosmetic items, and early promotional items. Whether collecting physical LEGO minifigures, sealed comic variants, or rare digital legacy cosmetics, Fortnite maintains a vibrant collecting ecosystem.
Serie TV
No traditional standalone television series have been produced for Fortnite; the franchise delivers its episodic content, live events, and animated shorts directly inside the game platform.

The Foundation was voiced and modeled after Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, while The Paradigm was played by Brie Larson.
