Panoramica

Fallout is a world-renowned post-apocalyptic franchise created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, debuting under Interplay Entertainment in 1997 before being acquired by Bethesda Softworks in 2007 for $5.75 million.
The series is defined by its retrofuturistic atompunk aesthetic, depicting a post-divergence United States devastated by a catastrophic nuclear conflict in 2077 known as the Great War.
Across five main role-playing games (Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76) and notable spin-offs like Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout Shelter, players explore how human civilization and mutated nature evolve centuries after the nuclear drop. Beyond video games, the franchise has expanded into tabletop gaming with systems by Fantasy Flight Games and Modiphius Entertainment, as well as an Emmy-nominated live-action television series produced by Kilter Films and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.
Origini
The franchise began with the release of Fallout in October 1997, developed by Interplay's RPG division (later named Black Isle Studios) as a spiritual successor to the 1988 hit Wasteland.
Initially designed to use Steve Jackson's GURPS tabletop system, a disagreement over the game's violent content led Interplay to develop its own proprietary SPECIAL system (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck).
Following the critical success of the 1997 original set in post-nuclear Southern California, Black Isle Studios produced Fallout 2 in 1998. Bethesda Softworks licensed the rights to develop three new Fallout games in 2004 and acquired full ownership of the IP in 2007, shifting the franchise into 3D open-world action RPGs starting with Fallout 3 in 2008.
