Cronologia
Panoramica
Created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, and Donald Wilson, Doctor Who debuted on BBC television on November 23, 1963. The core premise centers on 'The Doctor,' an alien Time Lord from Gallifrey who explores the universe inside the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space).
Because of a malfunctioning chameleon circuit, the TARDIS perpetually maintains the exterior of a blue British police box.
When facing death or extreme old age, Time Lords undergo regeneration, altering their physical appearance and personality while keeping their memories, a mechanism that has allowed fifteen primary numbered Doctors alongside canonical incarnations like the War Doctor, the Fugitive Doctor, and the Fourteenth Doctor. The franchise encompasses over 60 years of story across multiple distinct eras: the original Classic Era (1963–1989), the 1996 television movie, the Revived Era (2005–2022), and the expanded Whoniverse produced under Bad Wolf for the BBC and Disney+ (2023–present). Its overall reach includes three feature/TV films, eight television spin-off series, dozens of licensed video games, decades of continuous comic strips, expanded audio dramas, and hundreds of official novels.
Origini
The franchise originated at the BBC in 1963, launching with William Hartnell portraying the First Doctor and establishing foundational elements such as the Daleks and Cybermen. As early as the mid-1960s, international interest mounted, with Disney exploring potential adaptations like Marco Polo for The Wonderful World of Disney, alongside proposed feature film concepts in American media.
Following the conclusion of the original television run in 1989, British expatriate producer Philip Segal sought to create a co-production between American networks and the BBC. Segal worked through Columbia Pictures, ABC, and eventually Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.
Although Spielberg was enthusiastic, he stepped back when informed the project would air under Touchstone Television rather than the main Disney banner. Negotiations involving Amblin, Universal Pictures, the BBC, and BBC Worldwide stretched from 1992 until an agreement was finalized on January 13, 1994. This culminated in Doctor Who: The Television Movie (1996), written by Matthew Jacobs and directed by Geoffrey Sax, which featured Sylvester McCoy passing the mantle to Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor.

Collezionismo
For collectors, Doctor Who offers a vast multi-decade ecosystem spanning physical media, publishing, tabletop gaming, and construction toys. Print collecting centers around the legendary Target Books novelisations (1973–1994, revived in 2018), which served as the primary medium for fans to experience episodes prior to home video releases.
The 'Wilderness Years' produced sought-after print lines including Virgin Publishing's The Virgin New Adventures (1991–1997) and BBC Books' Eighth Doctor Adventures and Past Doctor Adventures lines (1997–2005), alongside continuous physical comic runs in Doctor Who Magazine (since 1979) and Titan Comics (since 2014). In media and physical gaming, Big Finish Productions has produced officially licensed full-cast audio CD releases since 1999, which remain highly prized by expanded-universe completionists. Figure and toy collectors focus on releases like the 2015 LEGO Dimensions: Doctor Who expansion sets, which introduced physical minifigures of the Doctors, Daleks, and the TARDIS integrated into toys-to-life gameplay. Modern tabletop collectors frequently target the 2023 Magic: The Gathering – Doctor Who crossover set, which integrated sixty years of canonical Doctors, companions, and iconic antagonists into physical trading cards.

The 2023 specials introduced 'bi-generation,' allowing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors to co-exist simultaneously.
