Cronologia
Panoramica
The Barbie franchise, owned by Mattel, is an international pop culture titan generating over $1 billion annually since 2011.
Debuting in 1959, the brand expanded from a single fashion doll into a comprehensive multimedia empire spanning consumer goods in 45 categories, books, video games, television series, direct-to-video animated films, and theatrical blockbusters.
Sold in over 150 countries with more than 99% global brand awareness, Barbie has represented over 200 careers, constantly evolving to reflect contemporary societal shifts and modern fashion trends.
Origini
Barbie was created by Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, who named the doll after her daughter, Barbara.
Handler noticed that her son Kenneth had toys allowing him to imagine various careers, whereas her daughter was largely limited to baby and caregiver dolls.
To give young girls a vehicle for career aspirations and self-expression, Handler designed an adult fashion doll. The original Barbie doll debuted at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959, selling for $3.00. Featuring her signature ponytail and a black-and-white striped swimsuit, Barbie achieved massive popularity despite initial industry skepticism regarding fashion dolls.
Personaggi
Collezionismo
Barbie collecting stands as one of the most vibrant subcultures in toy history. The collector ecosystem solidified in 1980 with the first National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention. The market boomed throughout the 1990s fueled by designer outfit releases and early online auctions like eBay. Primary high-end releases are organized under the Barbie Signature umbrella.
Holy grail items include mint-condition 1959 original #1 dolls, one of which sold at auction for $27,450 in 2006. High-fashion designer collaborations began in 1984 with Oscar de la Renta and expanded to high-jewelry pieces; notably, a one-of-a-kind Barbie created with jewelry designer Stefano Canturi featuring a pink Argyle diamond sold at auction for $302,500 in 2010 to benefit breast cancer research.

Barbie has officially run for President of the United States in every presidential election year since 1992.
