Cronologia
Biografia
Wingnut is an alien or mutant bat character who serves as a distinct satire and homage to DC's Batman.
Equipped with specialized glider wings, utility belts, and bat-gadgets, Wingnut is frequently paired with his mosquito-like partner Screwloose.
Throughout various TMNT media, Wingnut's role shifts dramatically between an erratic superhero, a tragic refugee, a villainous alien invader, and a steadfast ally to the Ninja Turtles. Depending on the continuity, Wingnut acts either as a solo character or a core member of the Mighty Mutanimals superhero team. Whether defending New York City alongside the Turtles or fighting against them, Wingnut remains one of the most uniquely recognizable figures in the TMNT pantheon.
Storia
Created in 1989 by artist Ryan Brown (with Screwloose co-created by Steve Murphy, Stephen Bissette, and Peter Laird), Wingnut made his print debut in the Ralston Purina TMNT Cereal mini-comics as a villain working for Shredder.
In the 1990 Archie Comics series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, his story was reimagined: he was an alien bat from the planet Huanu in Dimension X, whose homeworld and species were wiped out by Krang, driving him mad with a quest for vengeance.
In later screen adaptations, his origins were reinvented multiple times. The 1987 cartoon portrayed him as an alien invader from planet Flagenon. The 2012 cartoon introduced him as a comic book superhero brought into reality by an Aeon crystal. Most recently, the 2023 film Mutant Mayhem transformed Wingnut into a female mutant bat initially created as part of Superfly's anti-human gang before joining the Turtles.
I PEZZI DI WINGNUT
Evoluzione
Wingnut has undergone remarkable transformations over his three-decade history. Originally created in 1989 by Ryan Brown as a Batman parody who served Shredder, he quickly evolved into a far more complex figure in Archie Comics. There, he became a tragic alien refugee grieving the genocide of his home planet Huanu, forming a tight-knit superhero family with the Mighty Mutanimals until their dark execution in 1994.
In animated media, Wingnut transitioned from a goofy alien invader in the 1987 cartoon to a meta comic-book superhero brought to life in the 2012 series. His most drastic modern overhaul arrived with 2023's Mutant Mayhem, which reimagined Wingnut as a female mutant bat voiced by Natasia Demetriou. This iteration cemented her as a reformed mutant ally living openly in NYC, carrying the character forward into Tales of the TMNT and future cinematic sequels.
Da Collezione
For toy collectors, Wingnut represents one of the most memorable character designs from the original Playmates line. The vintage 1990 Playmates figure remains a fan favorite, equipped with detachable wings, a Bat-Gun, a Bat-Grenade, and a mini-figure of his companion Screwloose.
Modern collectors have seen a resurgence of high-end releases, notably NECA's Archie Comics-accurate Wingnut and Screwloose set produced for their Mighty Mutanimals line. In addition to NECA's collector-targeted line, Playmates released updated toys such as the 2024 'Mix N Match' Wingnut figure tied to Mutant Mayhem. Wingnut has also expanded into card games, featuring prominently in TMNT: UniVersus and as a card in Magic: The Gathering: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Wingnut was created in 1989 as a direct parody and homage to DC's Batman.
