Biografia

The XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero is a pivotal mobile suit in the After Colony (AC) timeline of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Originally designed around AC 175–180 by the five engineers who created the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, the unit was conceived as an unprecedented weapon built from cutting-edge Gundanium Alloy.

However, because its incredible destructive potential and the psychological hazard of its ZERO System cockpit interface transcended human limits, its developers sealed the blueprints away and built five simplified derivative Gundams instead. In AC 195, after the death of his father, pilot Quatre Raberba Winner discovered the hidden schematics and constructed Wing Zero. Driven to near-madness by the suit's ZERO System, Quatre launched a devastating campaign against space colonies before being stopped by Heero Yuy and Trowa Barton.

Wing Zero subsequently passed through the hands of multiple pilots—including Trant Clark, Duo Maxwell, Wufei Chang, and Zechs Merquise—all of whom struggled with or derived crucial revelations from the ZERO System interface. Wing Zero eventually became the definitive mobile suit of Heero Yuy following a duel and machine exchange with Zechs' Gundam Epyon. Heero piloted Wing Zero to turn the tide of the Eve Wars, using its massive Twin Buster Rifle to destroy the falling remains of the space fortress Libra. In the AC 196 conflict (Endless Waltz), Heero retrieved the suit—redesigned into its organic-winged Endless Waltz form—to breach the indestructible Brussels bunker and end the Barton Foundation rebellion, after which the legendary machine was destroyed.

LO SAPEVI?In the Italian television dub of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Wing Gundam Zero was translated as "Gundam Uccello di Fuoco" (Gundam Firebird).

Storia

The origins of Wing Gundam Zero date back to AC 175, when five core scientists fled the military organization OZ following the development of the OZ-00MS Tallgeese prototype.

Gathering in secrecy, Doctor J, Professor G, Doktor S (Dokuro S), Instructor H, and Master O set out to construct a mobile suit utilizing materials and technologies that did not yet exist at the time, including the super-durable Gundanium Alloy.

Recognizing the physical and tactical shortcomings of the Tallgeese, the team designed Wing Zero to be an absolute weapon. To bridge the gap between human pilot limits and the machine's immense performance, they created the ZERO System—a predictive computer interface that directly feeds combat outcomes into the pilot's brain to force a "perfect victory." Realizing that the suit's destruction coefficient was terrifyingly high and that adequate parts could not be sourced at the time, the scientists halted development around AC 180, sealed the plans, and split up to build five individual Gundams based on Wing Zero's design for Operation Meteor.

LO SAPEVI?Early official artwork placed Wing Zero's Wing Vulcans inside the wing binders before later official sources established them to be on the sides of the Shield.

Evoluzione

Wing Gundam Zero's evolution spans both in-universe technological iterations and real-world mechanical re-imaginings. Originally designed in AC 175 as the ultimate, unconstrained successor to the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, its extreme specifications and hazardous interface served as the direct genetic blueprint for the five specialized Gundams deployed in Operation Meteor (Wing, Deathscythe, Heavyarms, Sandrock, and Shenlong).

In expanded literature, mechanical designer Hajime Katoki re-envisioned the mobile suit for Endless Waltz (1997), replacing its original transformational binders with four organic, feathered wing units—a version retconned in The Glory of Losers manga as its rebuilt form following the destruction of the TV-styled "Proto Zero." Further down the timeline, the novel Frozen Teardrop presents the "Snow White" iteration, equipping the unit with specialized binders on Mars, while the 30th-anniversary manga 0.5 Point Half Preventer-7 continues to explore its operational narrative between AC 197 and the far future.

LO SAPEVI?The deployment of the chest Machine Cannons is depicted inconsistently in the anime, either sliding up slightly or rotating a full 180 degrees to reveal the barrels.

Da Collezione

As one of the most iconic mecha designs in anime history, Wing Gundam Zero enjoys extensive representation in both Bandai Gunpla plastic model kits and high-end action figures. Early Gunpla offerings debuted alongside the 1995 TV series in 1/144, 1/100, and 1/60 scales, but modern engineering has dramatically elevated the suit's collectible prestige. Significant modern releases include the 2013 Master Grade (MG) 1/100 Wing Gundam Proto Zero and the 2014 High Grade After Colony (HGAC) 1/144 kit.

Marking the franchise's 30th anniversary in September 2025, Bandai released Real Grade (RG) kit #43—a 1/144 model of the original TV version featuring a 5-axis wing binder mechanism and full Neo-Bird Mode transformation. For action figure collectors, Bandai has produced Wing Zero across multiple premium lines. Classic releases include the Mobile Suit in Action (MSiA) figures from 2003 and the Robot Damashii figure in 2012. Collectors also highly seek unique variants such as the MGSD Wing Gundam Zero EW [Structural Color Coating / Black] announced for late 2026/early 2027, which utilizes light-reflecting injection molding. Whether hunting vintage 1995 1/60 scale kits, Robot Damashii figures, or cutting-edge Real Grade models, Wing Zero remains a cornerstone grail for Gundam enthusiasts worldwide.

LO SAPEVI?In The Glory of Losers manga, Wing Zero appears as the "Wing Gundam Proto Zero" before being destroyed by Trant Clark and rebuilt into its Endless Waltz custom design by Mike Howard.
