URSULA
Ursula is a villainous cecaelia (half-human, half-octopus) dark witch and one of Disney's most iconic antagonists, debuting in the 1989 animated feature film The Little Mermaid. Visually inspired by the drag performer Divine and originally voiced by Pat Carroll, she is infamous for manipulating merfolk with indestructible magical contracts in her bid to usurp King Triton and rule the oceans.

Ursula is a power-hungry sea witch who resides in the remains of a leviathan lined with a garden of writhing polyps—the remains of merfolk who failed to uphold their contracts with her. Banished from Atlantica by King Triton, she harbors an intense grudge against the king and plots to steal his magical trident to claim control over the ocean.
To achieve her revenge, Ursula targets King Triton's youngest daughter, Princess Ariel. She tricks Ariel into trading her voice for human legs under a contract requiring a kiss of true love within three days.
To sabotage Ariel's efforts, Ursula transforms into a beautiful human alter-ego named Vanessa and uses Ariel's trapped voice to spellbind Prince Eric into an immediate marriage. During the film's climax, Ursula obtains King Triton's crown and trident after Triton surrenders his freedom to save Ariel. Using the trident's power, Ursula expands into a gigantic, ocean-dominating leviathan before Prince Eric impales her with the bowsprit of a wrecked ship, causing her to explode into sea foam.

Before her exile, Ursula lived a lavish life within the royal palace of King Triton in Atlantica, complete with fantastical feasts.
However, her inherent greed, dangerous use of dark magic, and villainous reputation led to her banishment by King Triton's orders.
Exiled to a secluded lair in a leviathan skeleton, she bided her time spying on Atlantica through her twin moray eel minions, Flotsam and Jetsam, awaiting the perfect opportunity to strike back at Triton. In stage and live-action adaptations—including the 2008 Broadway musical and the 2023 live-action feature film—Ursula's backstory was expanded to establish her as King Triton's estranged sister (and Princess Ariel's aunt), driven by jealousy over being denied an equal share of their royal inheritance.

Ursula's concept originated from the nameless, neutral sea witch in Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy tale, but Disney reimagined her as a primary antagonist. Early visual concepts considered modeling her after a lionfish, rockfish, or snake before animators settled on an octopod design inspired by the drag queen Divine. To stay within budget constraints, animators drew her with six tentacles rather than eight. Over time, Ursula's lore expanded across mediums.
While the 1989 film depicted her simply as an outcast courtier, the 2008 Broadway musical and 2023 live-action remake re-contextualized her as King Triton's sister. Extended literature and media added family members such as her sister Morgana (*The Little Mermaid II*), her daughter Uma (*Descendants*), and her sister Uliana. Her presence in gaming evolved from boss battles in *Kingdom Hearts* to an armored variant in *Disney Mirrorverse* and an interactive neighbor in *Disney Dreamlight Valley*.
Pat Carroll's final voice work prior to her death in July 2022 was recording lines for Ursula in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
