THE RIDDLER
The Riddler (Edward Nygma / Nashton) is a master strategist and one of Batman's most iconic adversaries in DC Comics, created by writer Bill Finger and artist Dick Sprang in 1948. Driven by a narcissistic compulsion to demonstrate his intellectual superiority, he leaves intricate riddles, deadly puzzles, and elaborate traps at the scenes of his crimes for Batman and the GCPD to decipher. Over decades of comic book storylines, films, television shows, and video games, he has evolved from a puzzle-obsessed thief into a menacing, high-tech strategist and criminal mastermind.
Cronologia
Biografia

Edward Nygma—also known as Edward Nashton or E. Nygma—is a high-profile supervillain operating in Gotham City, acting primarily as an adversary to Batman and a recurring member of rogue factions like the Secret Society of Super-Villains and the Legion of Doom.
Wearing his signature green suit with a bowler hat or unitard, a domino mask, and carrying a technological question-mark staff, he relies on criminal genius rather than physical strength. His role in Gotham's criminal hierarchy centers on his pathological compulsion to weave complex mental challenges into his schemes.
Despite boasting an intellect that rivals or exceeds Batman, Lex Luthor, and the Penguin, his obsessive-compulsive nature prevents him from carrying out standard crimes without leaving clues for law enforcement to decipher. Throughout his history, the Riddler has operated both as a solitary mastermind and a central force in major Gotham catastrophes. From engineering city-wide blackouts in 'Zero Year' to waging a bloody turf war against the Joker in 'The War of Jokes and Riddles', he remains one of the Dark Knight's most dangerous cerebral threats.
Storia

Before taking up his masked identity, Edward Nigma's fascination with puzzles began during his school years, where he cheated to win a contest and sparked a lifelong obsession with mental games. He later worked as a carnival con artist before applying his intelligence to criminal endeavors in Gotham City. In the Prime Earth continuity, Nygma was employed by Wayne Enterprises as a trusted strategist for Philip Kane, Bruce Wayne's uncle and acting CEO.
When Bruce returned to Gotham and disrupted Nygma's internal plots, Nygma sent the Red Hood Gang to assassinate Wayne, though the attempt failed. Compromised, Nygma resigned by trapping Kane in his office using a magnet and launched his broader criminal agenda. Adopting the persona of 'The Riddler', he initiated the 'Zero Year' crisis by cutting off Gotham's power grid, forcing citizens to 'get smart or die'. Teaming up with scientist Dr.
Karl Helfern (Doctor Death), he blew up Gotham's retaining walls during an approaching hurricane, flooding the city streets. He then utilized a plant-growth chemical developed by Dr. Pamela Isley to transform Gotham into a savage jungle under his total control. His reign ended when Batman tracked him to the Gotham Museum, engaged him in a challenge of twelve riddles, and physically subdued him before he could complete them, leading to his imprisonment at Arkham Asylum.
Evoluzione
Created in 1948 by writer Bill Finger and artist Dick Sprang for Detective Comics #140, the Riddler debuted as a theatrical carnival con artist who committed puzzle-themed crimes in a bright green unitard. After fading from DC publications for over fifteen years, his 1965 revival in Batman #171 inspired television producer William Dozier to cast him as the premiere antagonist of the 1966 live-action Batman TV series, catapulting him into mainstream pop culture. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he remained a key member of supervillain groups such as the Secret Society of Super Villains and the Legion of Doom. In the 1990s, storylines like Peter Milligan's 'Dark Knight, Dark City' shifted the character away from campy theatrics into a darker, occult-obsessed mastermind.
This trend culminated in Jeph Loeb's 2002 arc 'Batman: Hush', where he used a Lazarus Pit to cure his brain cancer, deduced Batman's true identity, and orchestrated a massive revenge scheme. In 2006, writer Paul Dini introduced a dramatic status-quo shift in Detective Comics, reforming Edward Nygma into a legitimate private detective working alongside the GCPD and Batman, until subsequent head trauma reverted him to villainy. Modern comic lines such as The New 52 and DC Rebirth redefined him as a ruthless, apocalyptic strategist capable of plunging Gotham into a savage wasteland ('Zero Year') or orchestrating deadly urban warfare ('The War of Jokes and Riddles'). His portrayal across external media has adapted accordingly, ranging from Jim Carrey's energetic, comic-book portrayal in Batman Forever (1995) to Paul Dano's terroristic, Zodiac-inspired serial killer in The Batman (2022).

Actor Paul Dano, who portrayed Edward Nashton in The Batman (2022), authored the official six-issue prequel comic 'The Riddler: Year One' for DC Black Label.
