Biografia

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, widely known as The Penguin, is a master mob boss and weapon smuggler operating in Gotham City. Unlike many of Batman's criminally insane adversaries, Cobblepot is completely sane, highly intelligent, and motivated by wealth, power, and revenge.

Posing as a self-proclaimed 'Gentleman of Crime,' he operates from his legitimate business front, the Iceberg Lounge, which serves as a central hub for Gotham's underworld activities and black-market arms deals. Equipped with a signature monocle, top hat, tuxedo, and a lethal arsenal of custom high-tech 'trick umbrellas,' Cobblepot maintains a firm grip on Gotham's criminal operations.

Throughout his career, he has formed uneasy alliances with major underworld figures like Carmine Falcone, Sofia Falcone, and Two-Face, while supplying weapons to villains such as The Joker, The Riddler, and Scarecrow to ensure his services remain indispensable. Despite facing rival usurpers like Ignatius Ogilvy ('Emperor Penguin') and near-fatal conflicts with vigilantes like Red Hood (Jason Todd), Cobblepot consistently re-establishes his dominance. From declaring himself Mayor of Gotham during the 'Arkham War' to faking his death to escape Batman and government pressure, The Penguin remains one of the Dark Knight's most calculated, resilient, and dangerous foes.

LO SAPEVI?Oswald secretly murdered all three of his older brothers as a child to gain his mother's undivided love and attention.

Storia

Born to Tucker and Esther Cobblepot, Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot entered the world with a physical defect—a distinct beak-like nose—that horrified his father. While his mother showered him with unconditional love, his father despised him, and his older brothers relentlessly bullied him alongside his peers, comparing his appearance and waddling walk to a penguin.

Following his father's death from pneumonia, his mother insisted that Oswald always carry an umbrella whenever he went outside. Isolated from human connection, young Oswald developed a deep fascination with birds and mechanical crafting, making bird models for his mother. However, the relentless torment from his family drove him to severe violence.

In secret, Oswald systematically murdered his older brothers—Jason, William, and Robert—making their deaths look like freak accidents, and killed his father to claim his mother's complete devotion. During his school years, Oswald continued to murder his bullies while tracking their deaths in a personal scrapbook. After dropping out in the seventh grade, he drifted into Gotham's criminal underworld. Starting out as a bartender and weapon smuggler, he rose through the ranks following the downfall of the Falcone family, opening the famous Iceberg Lounge and framing subordinates—such as Willis Todd—to protect his expanding empire.

LO SAPEVI?Cobblepot once married a literal penguin named Penny, whose murder by Bane led him to temporarily align with Batman.

Evoluzione

Since his debut in 1941's Detective Comics #58, the Penguin has undergone significant evolutions across comic book history. In the Golden Age, creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger depicted him as a flamboyant art thief obsessed with bird-themed heists and lethal umbrellas. By the Silver and Bronze Ages, writers introduced psychological depth to his backstory, establishing a childhood defined by severe bullying over his appearance and his mother's tragic obsession with forcing him to carry an umbrella. The Post-Crisis era marked a fundamental pivot: Cobblepot was reimagined from a colorful thief into a cold-blooded, pragmatic mob boss.

The 1995 debut of his legitimate criminal front, the Iceberg Lounge, solidified his modern status as Gotham's chief underworld broker and illegal arms dealer. In The New 52 and Rebirth eras, his storyline expanded to include betrayal by his lieutenant Ignatius Ogilvy ('Emperor Penguin') and intense feuds with Red Hood. Modern adaptations continue to push the boundaries of the character. From Tom King's Dawn of DC ongoing comic series to cinematic reimaginings—such as Tim Burton's feral sewer dweller in Batman Returns (1992), Colin Farrell's mobster 'Oz' Cobb in The Batman (2022) and HBO's The Penguin (2024), and the gender-swapped Oswalda Cobblepot in Batman: Caped Crusader (2024)—The Penguin remains one of fiction's most adaptable mobsters.

LO SAPEVI?In the 2024 animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, the character was reimagined as a female mob matriarch named Oswalda Cobblepot.

Da Collezione

For action figure enthusiasts and statue collectors, The Penguin represents one of DC's most visually striking villains. Premier manufacturers across the collectibles industry—including Hot Toys, Iron Studios, Prime 1 Studio, McFarlane Toys, NECA, and LEGO—frequently feature Cobblepot in their Gotham lines. His recognizable silhouette with the top hat, monocle, tuxedo, and signature trick umbrella makes his figures essential focal points in any Batman Rogues' Gallery collection. Collector demand spans several iconic interpretations of the character.

Tim Burton's 1992 Batman Returns incarnation (portrayed by Danny DeVito) remains highly sought after, with NECA, Iron Studios, and Hot Toys crafting detailed 1/6 scale figures and statues capturing his mutated aesthetic. Burgess Meredith's classic 1966 television portrayal and Nolan North's gritty appearance from the Batman: Arkham video game series (produced by DC Collectibles and McFarlane Toys) are also prime grails for legacy collectors. With the critical success of Matt Reeves' The Batman and HBO's The Penguin starring Colin Farrell, high-end statues and realistic figures of 'Oz' Cobb have surged in popularity. Combined with LEGO's long-running inclusion of Penguin across building sets since 2008, Cobblepot collectibles maintain strong market interest, particularly pieces showcasing his Iceberg Lounge environment or custom umbrella weaponry.

LO SAPEVI?To frame Batman and escape Gotham City, Oswald faked his death using mercury poisoning and relocated under the alias Paul Meredith.
