The Emperor of Mankind is the central figure of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, serving as the immortal ruler and patron god of the human race. After emerging from centuries of obscurity on an ancient Terra, he unified the warring factions of the planet to forge the Imperium.
To reclaim the stars, he created the twenty Primarchs and their Space Marine Legions, launching a Great Crusade that brought thousands of worlds under human compliance. He sought to lead humanity through a path of reason known as the Imperial Truth, intending to guide the race toward a secure future free from the influence of the Warp.
His vision was shattered by the Horus Heresy, a galaxy-spanning civil war led by his favorite son, the Warmaster Horus, who had been corrupted by the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. During the climax of the Siege of Terra, the Emperor defeated Horus but suffered mortal wounds. He was subsequently interred within the Golden Throne, a sophisticated life-support system and psychic amplifier. For 10,000 years, he has remained in a state of semi-consciousness, his fathomless psychic energy powering the Astronomican beacon for FTL travel while he is worshipped as a god by an empire he intended to be atheist.

He is the collective reincarnation of ancient shamans who committed ritual suicide to pool their souls into a single 'New Man' to protect humanity from the growing threats of the Warp.
As a 'Perpetual,' an immortal being, he lived in the shadows for over 30,000 years, appearing as various kings, sages, and scientists throughout history. During the Age of Technology, he traveled to the planet Molech to gain forbidden knowledge from a Warp gate, which allowed him to later create his transhuman generals, the Primarchs. He only revealed himself fully during the Unification Wars on Terra in late M29, using his first genetically-enhanced warriors, the Thunder Warriors, to crush techno-barbarian warlords and establish the foundation of the Imperium.
