THE CLOWN (SPAWN)
The Clown, whose true demonic form is the Violator (originally named Baziel), is a high-ranking hell-born demon created by Todd McFarlane for Image Comics' Spawn. As the eldest of the five Phlebiac Brothers, his role on Earth is to groom and guide newly appointed Hellspawn while concealing his true monstrous nature behind a grotesque, balding human disguise.

The Clown is the primary terrestrial disguise of the Violator, a high-ranking hell-born demon sent to Earth by Malebolgia, the lord of Hell's 8th Sphere. Standing 5'6" tall as a morbidly obese, balding man with blue face-paint depicting an 'M' shape, his chief purpose is to act as a guide for newly appointed Hellspawn, most notably Al Simmons.
His mission is not to directly kill the Hellspawn, but to groom them, weaken their resolve, and provoke them into wasting their powers so they can be turned into mindless soldiers for Satan's army. Despite his assigned duty, Clown harbors a deep hatred for humanity, viewing mortals as weak and asserting that demons should lead Hell's forces instead of human Hellspawn.
Bound by demonic laws that forbid him from killing a Spawn without explicit orders, Clown engages in psychological torment and manipulation to prove his superiority. He was the secret mastermind behind the murder of Spawn's wife, Wanda Blake, and orchestrates complex schemes to undermine both Heaven and Hell's ruling hierarchy. Over his long tenure on Earth, Clown has been slain multiple times, only to be reanimated by his master in Hell. When stripped of his powers or physical form, he resurfaces by possessing human host bodies or striking corrupt political alliances with figures like Jason Wynn. Whether operating as a cackling human freak or a vicious, horned hell-beast, he remains one of Spawn's most relentless and sadistically violent adversaries.

Created by writer and artist Todd McFarlane, the character debuted in Spawn #2 in May 1992. Canonical origins established in Violator: Origin (2024) reveal that before human history existed, he was originally a celestial angel in Heaven named Baziel before his eventual fall into Hell.
Following his transformation into a demon, he became the oldest and most powerful of the five Phlebiac Brothers—a demonic brood comprising Violator, Vandalizer, Vaporizer, Vacillator, and Viscerator. Dispatched to Earth by Malebolgia, Clown has operated in human society for centuries.
Four hundred years ago, he infiltrated a royal court in his Clown guise and convinced a young astrologer named Nostradamus to write his book of prophecies, ultimately sparking an occult craze in Japan during the 1990s and turning the country into a hotspot for demonic invasion.

Introduced in 1992 as a cackling, grotesque mentor disguised in human makeup, the character quickly evolved from a simple adversary into a complex figure within Image Comics. In Alan Moore's 1994 miniseries, Violator was stripped of his powers by Malebolgia for stepping out of line and hunted on Earth by his own Phlebiac brothers, forcing him into desperate alliances with human vigilantes.
Over the following decades, Clown demonstrated his versatility by possessing human bodies when physically destroyed and forming strategic alliances with human conspirators like Jason Wynn. In Spawn #300–#301, he unveiled a far bulkier, physically imposing demonic evolution. Recent expansions in the Spawn Universe introduced his ability to split into multiple autonomous Clown and Violator entities simultaneously, while the 2024 miniseries Violator: Origin deepened his lore by revealing his ancient backstory as the celestial angel Baziel.
Violator is invulnerable to most physical attacks, but can be permanently killed if decapitated by an angel or a Hellspawn.
