Biografia

The Shredder is the fearsome leader of the Foot Clan, a secret ninja syndicate operating out of New York City and feudal Japan depending on the continuity.

As the primary antagonist of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, his intense rivalry with Master Splinter and the Turtles is driven by vengeance, power, and deep-seated hatred rooted in historical feuds. While usually depicted as the deadly human martial artist Oroku Saki, Shredder's true nature varies across iterations.

In the 2003 animated series, he is revealed to be Ch'rell, a warlord of the alien Utrom race operating a high-tech robotic exoskeleton. In the 2018 *Rise of the TMNT* series, he appears as Kuroum, an ancient demon wrapped in soul-absorbing dark armor. Regardless of his incarnation, Shredder is a terrifying opponent who commands loyal Foot Shinobi and mutated henchmen like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Baxter Stockman. He frequently forms villainous alliances with otherworldly threats such as the alien warlord Krang and Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins.

LO SAPEVI?Kevin Eastman came up with the idea for Shredder while holding a metal cheese grater against his arm while doing dishes.

Storia

In real-life history, co-creator Kevin Eastman conceived the character while washing dishes after placing a metal cheese grater against his arm and imagining a villain armed with bladed armor. Co-creator Peter Laird suggested the name 'The Shredder' over earlier concepts like 'Grate Man'.

Within the lore of the original 1984 Mirage Studios comic series, Oroku Saki sought vengeance against ninja Hamato Yoshi for the death of his older brother, Oroku Nagi.

After slaying Yoshi and his lover Tang Shen in New York, Saki built the Foot Clan into a powerful criminal syndicate before being challenged by Yoshi's mutated pet rat, Splinter, and his trained Ninja Turtles. In the IDW Publishing comic continuity, his origins were reimagined with a supernatural twist: Oroku Saki was a feudal Japanese warlord who made a blood pact with the deity Kitsune to gain immortality, eventually reincarnating in modern New York to reclaim control of the Foot Clan.

LO SAPEVI?Before selecting 'The Shredder', co-creator Peter Laird considered naming the villain 'Grate Man'.

Evoluzione

Shredder has undergone drastic evolution since his 1984 comic debut. Originally created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a dark, lethal ninja who died in *TMNT #1*, early comic writers resurrected him through dark magic and alien worm-cloning tech before permanently ending his Mirage run. The 1987 animated series transformed him into an iconic, pop-culture mainstay—a slightly comical villain constantly thwarted alongside his alien partner Krang.

The 2003 animated series completely overhauled his origin, turning Shredder into Ch'rell, a sadistic Utrom alien criminal using an armored exoskeleton disguise. Modern media returned Shredder to his dark roots while adding mythological depth. IDW Comics established him as a reincarnated feudal warlord bound by ancient gods, who eventually underwent a redemption arc in *The Armageddon Game*. Meanwhile, *The Last Ronin* expanded his dark legacy into a dystopian future through his tyrannical grandson, Oroku Hiroto.

LO SAPEVI?Shredder was originally killed off in his very first appearance in *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1* in 1984.
