SCORPION
Scorpion is one of the premier flagship faces and iconic antiheroes of the Mortal Kombat franchise, created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Originally introduced as Hanzo Hasashi, a vengeful resurrected Shirai Ryu ninja seeking retribution for the murder of his family and clan, his identity spans across multiple realities, including Kuai Liang taking up the mantle in the New Era timeline. Famous for his hellfire manipulation and spear attack accompanied by the shout 'Get over here!', Scorpion remains a cornerstone character across video games, movies, television, and comics.
Cronologia
Biografia
Scorpion is a master ninja and one of the central antiheroes of the Mortal Kombat series. Originally introduced as Hanzo Hasashi, a lethal warrior of the Japanese Shirai Ryu clan, he was slain alongside his wife Harumi and son Satoshi during a massacre attributed to the rival Lin Kuei clan.
Resurrected in the Netherrealm as a fire-wielding spectre by the sorcerer Quan Chi, Scorpion was driven by a relentless desire for revenge against Bi-Han (the original Sub-Zero), whom he mistakenly believed to be responsible for the destruction of his family. Throughout the franchise's evolving timelines, Scorpion's role alternates between a vengeful spectre manipulated by evil forces and a noble, honorable protector.
Although frequently cast in an antagonistic role due to his terrifying undead form and Netherrealm origins, he is fundamentally motivated by emotional pain and clan loyalty rather than malice. After learning that Quan Chi was the true architect of his clan's genocide, Hanzo eventually regained his human form, restored the Shirai Ryu clan to protect Earthrealm, and took in refugees such as Kenshi's son, Takeda Takahashi. In Fire God Liu Kang's rewritten timeline (Mortal Kombat 1), the legacy of Scorpion is re-imagined. Kuai Liang (traditionally the second Sub-Zero) assumes the role of Scorpion alongside his brother Bi-Han within the Lin Kuei, before breaking away to form the new Shirai Ryu with his wife Harumi. In this era, Hanzo Hasashi appears as a young homeless orphan taken in as a promising initial recruit of the Shirai Ryu.
Storia
Hanzo Hasashi's origins begin within the Shirai Ryu clan, a ninja order established by Takeda after breaking away from the rival Lin Kuei.
Although Hanzo's father was a former Shirai Ryu member who strictly forbade his son from joining the clan to protect him from the assassin's life, Hanzo joined against his father's wishes to provide a comfortable life for his wife Harumi and son Satoshi.
Tragedy struck when Hanzo, his family, and his entire clan were slaughtered in an attack orchestrated by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi, who framed the Lin Kuei warrior Bi-Han for the massacre. Reborn in the Netherrealm as an undead spectre bound by vengeance, Hanzo took the name Scorpion and tracked down Bi-Han, killing him at the first Mortal Kombat tournament and unwittingly turning Bi-Han into the wraith Noob Saibot. Scorpion spent years pursuing vengeance until discovering Quan Chi's deceit, eventually executing the sorcerer after regaining his human body.
I PEZZI DI SCORPION
Poteri & Abilità
• Spear (Kunai): Scorpion's signature weapon consisting of a kunai attached to a sturdy rope or metal chain (colloquially a kyoketsu-shoge or Chinese rope dart/shéng biāo), impaling opponents to drag them closer while shouting 'Get over here!' or 'Come here!'. Can be infused with Hellfire. • Hellfire Manipulation: Complete immunity to fire and the ability to project Netherrealm fireballs, summon bursts of flame under opponents, engulf his body in damaging fire auras, ignite weapons, and breathe fire from his unmasked skull. • Teleportation: Ability to instantly teleport behind or underneath opponents for surprise strikes (such as the Hellfire Punch or Hell Port) or open portals to the Netherrealm at will.
• Spectre Physiology & Resurrection: As an undead spectre bound by revenge, he is immune to permanent death and capable of self-resurrection even if his physical body is completely destroyed. • Necromancy & Demonic Summoning: Ability to summon Hellspawn undead comrades, self-destructing demonic minions, and floating skull creatures that spew explosive fire projectiles. • Hellfire Skeleton Transformation: Ability to transform into a fiery skeleton that incinerates anything he touches. • Emotional Pain Empowerment: As a resurrected human, his wraith powers and Hellfire intensity depend on reliving his emotional pain and shame, dramatically boosting his combat abilities to deity-exceeding levels at the risk of being consumed by the fire or losing control to his hostile Scorpion persona. • Armed Combat & Swordsmanship: Master of armed martial arts, proficient with various weapons including axes, katanas, and twin Ninjato swords featuring stingers modeled after scorpions.

Evoluzione
Scorpion's visual appearance and character arc have evolved dramatically since his introduction in 1992. Originally appearing as a yellow palette swap of Sub-Zero in early 2D arcade titles, his outfit developed unique features including skeletal motifs, bone-laced armor, and skull belt buckles in Mortal Kombat 4, progressing to full samurai armor designs in Deadly Alliance and Armageddon. His equipment expanded from a simple kunai on a rope to twin Ninjato swords featuring scorpion stinger hilts. Narratively, Scorpion evolved from a straightforward undead villain seeking blind vengeance into Mortal Kombat's flagship antihero.
While early media cast him as an antagonist due to his sinister spectre form—revealing a flaming skull when unmasked—later games highlighted his strict code of honor, such as swearing to protect Kuai Liang to compensate for killing Bi-Han. In Mortal Kombat X, Hanzo Hasashi regained his humanity, rebuilt the Shirai Ryu clan as Earthrealm protectors, and adopted a fatherly role toward Takeda Takahashi. In Mortal Kombat 1 (2023), the character underwent its most radical shift: Kuai Liang assumed the role of Scorpion as a loyal brother to Bi-Han before breaking away to form the Shirai Ryu, while Hanzo Hasashi was reimagined as a young homeless orphan recruited into the clan.
Curiosità
• Series co-creator Ed Boon personally provided the iconic voice for Scorpion's catchphrases 'Get over here!' and 'Come here!' in both the video games and the 1995 feature film. • Scorpion's signature spear attack is based on an ancient Chinese weapon known as the Rope Dart or Shéng biāo.
• In Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Scorpion rarely utters profane versions of his signature catchphrases. • In the rebooted universe of Mortal Kombat 1, Kuai Liang becomes Scorpion while Hanzo Hasashi is introduced as a young homeless orphan. • Scorpion's trademark yellow costume was originally adopted to mock the Lin Kuei clan and Sub-Zero.
