Biografia
The RX-78-2 Gundam is a groundbreaking prototype ground and space mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces under Project V to counter the Principality of Zeon's dominant mobile suit technology during the One Year War.
Created under the leadership of Chief Engineer Tem Ray, the unit is constructed from lightweight, ultra-durable Luna Titanium Alloy (later designated Gundarium Alloy) and powered by an advanced fusion generator. Its onboard Learning Computer continuously collects real-time combat data to refine maneuverability and automated responses for its pilot. The Gundam's operational career began abruptly in September U.C.
0079 during a secret test phase at the Side 7 colony. When Zeon forces launched a surprise assault, civilian teenager Amuro Ray commandeered the machine, utilizing its revolutionary beam rifle to destroy the invading Zaku units. Stationed aboard the warship White Base under Commander Bright Noa, Amuro and the RX-78-2 spearheaded Federation ground and space operations across Earth, Solomon, and A Baoa Qu. The mobile suit fought tirelessly against elite Zeon forces until its destruction in December U.C. 0079 during a dual-annihilation duel against Char Aznable's MSN-02 Zeong, culminating in the historic 'Last Shooting' stance.
Storia
The origins of the RX-78 project trace back to U.C. 0078 when Federation engineer Tem Ray reviewed combat footage of Zeon's MS-04 mobile suit operating in the A Baoa Qu region. Recognizing that the Federation's existing RCX-76 Guncannon fleet was tailored for long-range bombardment rather than suit-to-suit combat, Tem proposed a agile new unit designed specifically for close-quarters mobile suit warfare.
His warnings were validated during the Battle of Mare Smythii, where four Zeon Zakus and an MS-04 Bugu effortlessly wiped out twelve Iron Cavalry Squadron Guncannons, prompting immediate Federation authorization for the RX-78 Gundam project.
The prototype suit was initially completed at Anaheim Electronics in rollout colors of white and light gray, featuring twin straight head antennae rather than the iconic V-fin. In September U.C. 0079, while undergoing secret operational testing at the Side 7 Noa colony, Amuro Ray accidentally discovered top-secret technical diagrams and fusion engine schematics on his father's personal computer. When Zeon Zakus infiltrated the colony later that day, Amuro used those schematics to boot up the RX-78-02/RX-78-2, marking the unexpected combat debut of humanity's most famous mobile suit.

Evoluzione
The RX-78 frame underwent continuous engineering overhauls during the One Year War. It debuted as the Rollout Type, painted in white and light gray with twin straight antennae on the rear head assembly rather than the traditional V-fin. Once deployed, it received its signature red, blue, yellow, and white tri-color scheme. Early versions contained extensive built-in ballistic weapons, including twin shoulder magnums, a right-shoulder gatling gun, forearm vulcans, and an optional backpack shoulder cannon. During mid-war refits at Jaburo, engineers reconfigured the suit into its Middle Type specification.
Mechanics integrated the modular Core Block System (housing the FF-X7 Core Fighter) into the central frame to improve pilot survivability and telemetry collection. As operations transitioned to space, the unit was adapted into its Late Type configuration. Mechanics stripped away heavy fixed ballistics to lower dead weight, installing twin shoulder gatling cannons before ultimately replacing them with high-output vernier thrusters and gate-shaped shoulder armor. Finally, to handle Amuro Ray's rapid Newtype reaction times, technicians coated the suit's joint actuators with Magnet Coating, dramatically cutting friction and response lag.
