ROGUE TROOPER
Rogue Trooper is an iconic British military science-fiction anti-hero created by writer Gerry Finley-Day and artist Dave Gibbons for the 2000 AD anthology comic in 1981. A blue-skinned, genetically engineered Genetic Infantryman immune to the toxic atmosphere of Nu-Earth, Rogue traverses ruined battlefields as the sole survivor of the Quartz Zone Massacre on a quest to execute the Traitor General. Accompanied by the sentient biochips of his fallen comrades loaded into his rifle, helmet, and backpack, Rogue's saga spans decades of comics, video games, prose novels, and a feature film.

Biography

Rogue is a blue-skinned super-soldier created as part of the Genetic Infantrymen (G.I.s) by the Souther faction on the war-torn world of Nu-Earth.
Engineered specifically to withstand the planet's lethal, chemically poisoned atmosphere, Rogue was designed for ultimate warfare against the opposing totalitarian Nort regime.
However, his mission changed drastically when his entire regiment was betrayed and slaughtered during their initial deployment in the infamous Quartz Zone Massacre. Becoming a lone rogue warrior, Rogue went AWOL across Nu-Earth with a single objective: hunting down the Souther Traitor General responsible for the massacre. Joined by his three closest fallen comrades—whose consciousnesses survive on biochips loaded into his rifle, helmet, and backpack—Rogue navigates contract missions, intergalactic warfare, and shifting command structures while remaining the definitive, unstoppable survivor of the G.I. program.
Origins & Backstory

The origin of Rogue Trooper is rooted in a brutal stalemate on Nu-Earth, a planet strategically located near a cosmic wormhole.
As the democratic Southers and totalitarian Norts waged endless chemical and biological warfare, toxic 'Chem-clouds' rendered the atmosphere unbreathable for ordinary humans without protective suits.
To break the deadlock, Souther scientists created the Genetic Infantrymen: blue-skinned clones immune to poisons, acids, and toxins, and capable of surviving in a vacuum without suits. The G.I. regiment's promise was destroyed at the Quartz Zone when a high-ranking Souther general betrayed the deployment details to the Norts in exchange for amnesty. The resulting massacre wiped out the regiment, leaving Rogue as the sole G.I. survivor. Recovering the biochips containing the memories and minds of his dead brothers—Gunnar, Bagman, and Helm—Rogue embarked on an unending mission of revenge.

Character Evolution
Since debuting in 1981 in *2000 AD* Prog #228, Rogue Trooper has evolved through several distinct eras. Created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, the 'Classic Era' (1981–1985) focused on Rogue hunting the Traitor General across Nu-Earth and Planet Horst. Following the conclusion of that hunt, the 'Hitman / Mercenary Era' (1985–1989) saw writers like Simon Geller and artists like Will Simpson take Rogue off-planet as an intergalactic mercenary executing contracts to force an end to the war.
In 1989, co-creator Dave Gibbons rebooted the line with *The War Machine*, introducing a grittier, Vietnam War-style setting and a new biochip-less blue G.I. named Friday. Original Rogue briefly returned in crossovers before his apparent death in 1995. Following spin-offs like *Venus Bluegenes* and *Tor Cyan* (1997), the original Rogue was officially restored to canon in 2002. Modern entries, including Garth Ennis's *Blighty Valley* (2023) and Alex de Campi's *Ghost Patrol* (2025/2026), explore time-bending tactical scenarios and early origins of the Genetic Infantryman program ahead of the 2026 feature film adaptation.
Collectibles & Merchandise
For comic and sci-fi video game collectors, *Rogue Trooper* represents a key cornerstone of British sci-fi history. Rare print collectors seek out original 1981 issues of *2000 AD* Prog #228 alongside the North American reprints issued during the late 1980s and early 1990s by Quality Comics and Marvel Comics’ Quality imprint. In physical media gaming, physical copies of the BAFTA-nominated 2006 Rebellion video game for Xbox and PS2, as well as the 2017 *Rogue Trooper Redux* physical game releases, remain popular shelf items. Literary collectors seek out original prose novels like *Crucible* and EN Publishing's 2020 *Rogue Trooper RPG* hardcover books, while graphic novel releases like *Ghost Patrol*—featuring cover art by original co-creator Dave Gibbons—continue to draw interest ahead of the 2026 animated feature film.

Rogue's primary equipment is powered by the living biochips of his dead squadmates: Gunnar (rifle), Bagman (backpack), and Helm (helmet).
