Reed Richards made his historic comic debut in Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. In his classic origin story, Reed spearheaded a private spaceflight alongside his best friend Ben Grimm, his girlfriend Susan Storm, and her younger brother Johnny Storm.
When cosmic rays breached the spacecraft's shielding, all four crew members were transformed, with Reed gaining the power to stretch, elongate, and compress his physical form into any imaginable shape. In alternate universe continuity such as Earth-6160, Reed's origin took a darker path.
A villainous alternate version of himself known as The Maker used time manipulation via the Immortus Engine to alter Reed's flight timing, causing the crew to miss the cosmic storm and resulting in an explosion that killed Johnny and broke the surviving crew. The Maker subsequently imprisoned Reed in Latveria, surgically disfiguring him and welding a metal mask to his face to force him into adopting the persona of Doom.
