The vessel made its official debut in 2999 during the events of 'Space Pilot 3000', when Philip J. Fry emerged from cryogenic freezing and joined the Planet Express crew.
To power the vehicle, Professor Farnsworth developed an advanced Dark Matter Engine fueled by dark matter droppings produced by Lord Nibbler. This propulsion mechanism was later modified when the galactic supply of dark matter was depleted, adapting the engine to run on whale oil.
