OGRYN
Ogryns (Homo sapiens gigantus) are a massive, immensely strong, and intellectually simple Abhuman subspecies in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Evolved on high-gravity worlds, they serve the Imperium of Man as shock troops, bodyguards, and heavy assault infantry. Bound by an absolute, childlike devotion to the Emperor of Mankind, Ogryns wield specialized gear ranging from heavy Ripper Guns and Slabshields to cybernetic Charonite Claws.
Cronologia
Biografia
Ogryns are heavy shock infantry and elite bodyguards who serve in the military forces of the Imperium of Man, most prominently within the Astra Militarum and the Solar Auxilia.
Standing between 2.5 and 3 meters tall, their massive physical bulk, extreme bone density, and thick hides allow them to endure heavy small-arms fire while wielding physical strength comparable to or exceeding that of a Space Marine or Ork Nob.
Despite their terrifying presence on the battlefield, Ogryns possess a childlike, literal-minded mentality and rely on human officers for tactical direction. Their absolute loyalty to the Imperium is fostered by Imperial Commissars who channel Ogryn simplicity into religious devotion, convincing them that every military command comes directly from the Emperor of Mankind Himself. Although severe claustrophobia makes entering armored transports like Chimeras or Valkyries difficult without drugs or reassurance, Ogryns remain irreplaceable line-breakers. Ogryns who undergo Biochemical Ogryn Neural Enhancement (BICS) surgery become squad leaders known as 'Bone'eads,' gaining the mental capacity to comprehend multi-step orders and lead their brethren.
Storia
The evolutionary origins of the Ogryn subspecies lie in the Age of Technology between M15 and M25, when human colonists settled cold, barren, high-gravity environments that frequently functioned as penal colonies. Cut off from Terra during the devastating Warp storms of the Age of Strife, generations of isolation under intense gravitational pull caused rapid genetic adaptation.
This resulted in immense muscle mass and thick skeletons at the direct expense of cognitive capacity. During the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy in the 30th Millennium, specialized cybernetically altered Ogryns known as Charonites were integrated into Solar Auxilia cohorts.
Originating from void-capable human settlements like the Saturnyne Enclaves, Charonite Ogryns underwent extreme augmentation, having their forearms amputated to implant powerful servo-claws. Although the ancient Mechanicum initially banned Charonite technology as unholy, dispensations allowed their limited deployment in boarding actions. Charonite squads fought throughout the Horus Heresy, notably in the Agathean Domain and during the Treachery at Port Maw, where Grand Admiral LaBray unleashed them inside the flagship Triumph of Reason to hold off Sons of Horus Traitor Astartes until Warmaster Horus Lupercal intervened.

Evoluzione
Since their debut in 1987's Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Ogryns have evolved from primitive metal-cast auxiliaries into one of the most recognizable and versatile Abhuman factions in tabletop history. Initially depicted as simple shock troops equipped with primitive weapons or early Ripper Guns, their lore and rules expanded significantly in 1995's Codex: Imperial Guard, which introduced named characters like Nork Deddog and standardized their heavy weapon platforms.
Over the decades, Games Workshop broadened Ogryn tactical archetypes across multiple sub-settings. In 2014, 6th Edition introduced Bullgryns, giving Astra Militarum armies dedicated heavy defensive options with Slabshields and Power Mauls. The Horus Heresy series fleshed out their 30k origins with cybernetic Charonite combat servitors, while Necromunda introduced industrial Jotunn servitors and Slave Ogryn gangs. In modern media, most notably 2022's Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, Ogryns transitioned into fully customisable playable protagonists with expansive talent trees.
Da Collezione
For miniature collectors, Ogryns represent a storied lineage in Citadel design. Rare early collector items include the original 1987 metal Ogryn Champions sculpted by Jes Goodwin and Bob Olley.
The primary mainstay for modern Astra Militarum hobbyists is the 2014 multipart plastic kit, which allows builders to construct standard Ogryns, Bullgryns, or a dedicated Ogryn Bodyguard. Collector options expand further with resin and plastic kits from Forge World and Games Workshop, including 30k Solar Auxilia Ogryn Charonites and Necromunda Slave Ogryn boxes. In September 2026, Games Workshop revealed a new plastic Ogryn Minders kit for Necromunda's House Orlock, specifically designed as a tribute to the original 1987 drum-fed Ripper Gun models.

The legendary Ogryn Nork Deddog was considered an intellectual genius among his kind because he could count to four and write the letter 'N'.
