Biografia

Mer-Man, whose real name is revealed in collector lore as Squidish Rex, is the aquatic Ocean Warlord of Eternia. Operating primarily from the Crystal Sea and the Sea of Rakash, he rules over undersea populations such as the Aquaticans.

While he is most frequently seen as a high-ranking member of Skeletor's Evil Warriors, Mer-Man maintains a high degree of autonomy, regularly orchestrating independent aquatic schemes to expand his dominance over both the oceans and the surface world.

Despite reporting to Snake Mountain, Mer-Man's allegiance to Skeletor is largely born out of necessity and bitter circumstances rather than absolute loyalty. Over the history of the franchise, he has frequently sought to obtain powerful magical artifacts—such as He-Man's weapons or the Pearl of Power—to equal Skeletor's authority or claim total control over Eternia's seas, preferring the depths of the ocean to surface-world conflict whenever possible.

LO SAPEVI?Toy designer Mark Taylor based Mer-Man's visual concept on Bernie Wrightson's artwork for DC Comics' Swamp Thing.

Storia

In early minicomics lore, Mer-Man was among the first minions to join Skeletor. Driven by a desire to become Skeletor's equal, he plotted to capture He-Man's Power Sword and harness, believing they held the key to ultimate power.

In these early battles, he joined forces with Beast Man to knock He-Man unconscious and cast him into the ocean, though He-Man survived to defeat them.

Expanded lore in the 2002 animated series and Masters of the Universe Classics revealed a more tragic origin: Mer-Man was the self-appointed king of his own underwater kingdom. After fighting a fierce battle against his ocean rival Aquarus over contested territory, Mer-Man returned to find his home realm completely destroyed. Forced into exile and servitude under Keldor (Skeletor), he was trapped behind the Mystic Wall in the Dark Hemisphere for years, spending his time searching the Sea of Rakash for Coridite crystals to help Skeletor escape.

LO SAPEVI?The plastic mold used for Mer-Man's 1982 figure was repainted black and white in 1985 to create the character Stinkor, which was chemically treated to give off a musky scent.

Evoluzione

Mer-Man's characterization has evolved significantly since his inception in 1981. Designed by Mark Taylor with inspiration from Bernie Wrightson's rendition of DC's Swamp Thing, his earliest 1980s figure featured a bright blue-green body with scaly yellow armor. In the 1983 Filmation animated series, Alan Oppenheimer voiced him with a more fish-like, green-and-yellow look, balancing his warlord persona with occasional comedic traits.

The 2002 Mike Young Productions reboot dramatically modernized Mer-Man, redesigning him as a terrifying, deep-sea predator with sharp teeth and brown armor (sculpted by the Four Horsemen). Voiced by Scott McNeil, this version emphasized his regal yet ferocious nature as an exiled sea king. In 2021's Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, voiced by the late Kevin Conroy, Mer-Man underwent a grittier transformation. Depicted without his classic golden armor and missing an eye, he appeared as a bitter, hardened ruler living in isolation in the Crystal Sea.

LO SAPEVI?Star Trek icon George Takei voiced the reimagined CGI version of Mer-Man in the 2021 Netflix kids' series.

Da Collezione

As one of the original 1982 first-wave figures, Mer-Man holds iconic status among MOTU collectors. The original vintage figure came equipped with a translucent yellow sword and scaly chest armor. The mold for this figure is famous in toy history for being repainted and reused by Mattel in 1985 to create the villain Stinkor.

Key collectible releases include the 2002 MOTU 200X figure featuring brown armor inspired by early prototype art, and the highly sought-after 2009 Masters of the Universe Classics figure by the Four Horsemen. The Classics edition included two interchangeable heads—one replicating the 1982 vintage figure and another based on the unreleased 'Lords of Power' prototype. Modern releases produced by Super7 (including 2018 Filmation-accurate, 2019 Vintage-style, and ReAction figures) and Mattel's MOTU Origins line (featuring both the retro standard release and the 2021 'Lords of Power' variant) remain popular staples for contemporary action figure collections.

LO SAPEVI?Mer-Man's original design was directly inspired by artist Bernie Wrightson's rendition of Swamp Thing.
