MALEBOLGIA
Malebolgia is the ancient and brutal ruler of the Eighth Sphere of Hell, known for orchestrating the deal that transformed Al Simmons into the Hellspawn. As the primary puppet master of the Spawn universe, his influence spans millennia of cosmic warfare between Heaven and Hell.
Cronologia
Biografia
Malebolgia is the absolute sovereign of Malebolge and the primary architect of Al Simmons' destiny. For over 70,000 years, he has ruled the Eighth Circle of Hell with an iron fist, harvesting souls to forge an army capable of launching a final assault on Heaven.
He is depicted as a cosmic manipulator who views mortals and his own officers, the Hellspawns, as mere expendable pawns in a universal power game. Throughout the decades, Malebolgia has established himself as the looming 'final boss' of the franchise.
His character is defined by his grand ambition to conquer the High Heavens, using the symbiotic power of necroplasm to bond human souls to demonic technology. Even during his periods of absence, the vacuum of power he leaves behind often drives the central conflicts of the series.
Storia
The origins of Malebolgia date back to the early creation of the infernal system.
After millennia of dominance, in 1992, he chose the CIA assassin Al Simmons to be his new necroplasmic commander.
Through a cruel deception, he returned Simmons to Earth five years after his death, stripped of his memory and horribly disfigured, bound to a symbiotic suit. This Faustian bargain not only launched the Spawn saga but also revealed Malebolgia's predatory nature, constantly seeking the perfect warrior to lead his legions in the upcoming war against the forces of Light.
Evoluzione
Originally presented as the supreme personification of evil, Malebolgia has transitioned from an omnipotent monster to a vulnerable essence.
After his iconic death at the hands of Spawn in issue #100, he spent years attempting to return, notably possessing the body of the serial killer 'The Freak' around issue #200. His most recent incarnation in 2026 depicts him in a 'humanized' and weakened state, forced into a brutal campaign to reclaim his throne from other hellish usurpers, shifting the character from a detached god to a ferociously determined survivor.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Malebolgia is synonymous with McFarlane Toys. The original 1997 movie figure, despite its early CGI-inspired aesthetic, remains a piece of brand history.
High-end collectors seek out the large-scale 'Mega-Figures' and statues that capture his grotesque, mountain-like demonic form. With the character's 2026 resurrection and the upcoming 'King Spawn' film, there is renewed market interest in figures depicting his new humanized form, making vintage 90s releases and the rare Armageddon-era statues true grails for completists.
He ruled for over 70,000 years before his first defeat at the hands of Al Simmons.
