Cronologia
Biografia
Luigi is Mario's younger twin brother and constant partner in defending the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. Physically taller and slimmer than Mario, Luigi is recognized by his signature green shirt, dark blue overalls, brown work shoes, and green cap bearing an 'L' emblem.
Though kind-hearted and heroic at his core, Luigi possesses a timid, clumsy, and self-conscious personality, often showing extreme skittishness around ghosts and dark places.
Despite his fears and living in the shadow of his famous brother, Luigi regularly steps up to overcome terror when his loved ones or homeland are in danger. He is the central star of his own spin-off series, starting with Luigi's Mansion, where he acts as a courageous ghost hunter equipped with Professor E. Gadd's Poltergust vacuum cleaner to save Mario and his friends from King Boo.
Storia
Luigi was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and introduced in the 1983 arcade title Mario Bros.
His name was inspired by a popular pizzeria near Nintendo of America's headquarters named 'Mario & Luigi's,' while also serving as a pun on the Japanese word 'ruigi', meaning 'resemblance.' Originally designed as a green palette swap of Mario to facilitate two-player cooperative play, Luigi's distinct tall and thin physical build was established in 1988's Super Mario Bros.
2. Within game lore, Luigi and Mario were delivered together as infant twins by a stork in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, though Baby Luigi was briefly kidnapped by Kamek. While early media occasionally portrayed him as Mario's much younger sibling, modern canonical titles confirm that Mario and Luigi are twin brothers, with Luigi being the younger twin.
Evoluzione
Luigi began his history in 1983 as a color swap for Player 2 in Mario Bros., identical to Mario in both visual shape and movement. His technical separation started in Super Mario Bros. 2, which gave him unique gameplay mechanics—higher jumping, floating flutter jumps, and slippery movement—as well as his signature tall, slender physical frame.
Early comics and cartoons characterized him with a Brooklyn accent and comedic anxiety, laying the groundwork for his unique identity. With 2001's Luigi's Mansion, Nintendo fully transformed Luigi from an understated sidekick into a standalone leading man defined by ghost hunting and overcome fears. His popularity led Nintendo to declare 2013 'The Year of Luigi,' releasing multiple games dedicated to him. Over four decades, Luigi has evolved from an obscure duplicate into a rich, beloved protagonist with his own starring series, film appearances, and unique gameplay identity.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Luigi successfully tricks foes by disguising himself in Princess Peach's dress.
