Cronologia
Biografia
Leonardo is traditionally presented as the most senior, ordered, and disciplined of the four Ninja Turtles, serving as their undisputed field leader and tactical mastermind.
Characterized by a serious, mature nature and a commanding personality, he takes the responsibility of keeping his brothers focused on their ninja training and their fight against evil very seriously.
He shares an exceptionally strong spiritual and emotional bond with his father and sensei, Master Splinter (Hamato Yoshi), whose teachings he follows with unwavering devotion. In battle, Leonardo is instantly recognizable by his signature blue bandana and his mastery of twin katanas (or ninjatō/shōtō). Guided by the samurai code of Bushido, his sense of honor, selflessness, and tactical vision define his role within the team. While his strict discipline occasionally leads to intense clashes with his hot-headed brother Raphael, Leonardo's leadership, endurance, and deep love for his family remain the anchor that holds the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles together across every universe.
Storia
Created by comic book writers and artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, Leonardo made his historic debut in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, published by Mirage Studios in May 1984. Originating as an ordinary red-eared slider turtle in New York City, he was exposed to a mysterious alien mutagen ooze alongside his three brothers.
Mutated into humanoid form, he was rescued and raised in the hidden sewers beneath Manhattan by Master Splinter, a mutated martial arts master who named him after Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci. Splinter trained Leonardo in the art of ninjutsu and the principles of Bushido, raising him to become a disciplined warrior.
In his early comic book adventures, Leonardo wore a red bandana—identical to his brothers—before the 1987 animated series permanently established his signature blue color. From his early solo trial in the seminal 1986 Leonardo Micro-Series #1, where he single-handedly survived a brutal Foot Clan ambush on the rooftops of New York, Leonardo's origins established him as a resilient, dedicated leader born to protect his family and defend humanity from dark forces.
I PEZZI DI LEONARDO
Evoluzione
Since his 1984 debut, Leonardo has undergone remarkable character transformations across four decades of media. In Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's original Mirage Studios comics, he was a grim, red-bandana-wearing warrior defined by rooftop battles and raw survival. The landmark 1987 animated series redefined him for mainstream audiences, introducing his signature blue bandana and cementing his role as the level-headed, authoritative field leader of the team. As the franchise matured, Leonardo's narratives explored deeper psychological and physical challenges.
In Image Comics' Volume 3, he suffered severe trauma after losing his left hand and adopting a blade prosthetic. The 2003 animated series highlighted his battle with PTSD following near-fatal encounters with Shredder, leading to spiritual healing under the Ancient One. In IDW's comic run, Leo experienced one of his darkest arcs as "Dark Leo," brainwashed into serving as Shredder's chunin before redeeming himself to co-lead a reformed Foot Clan. Contemporary incarnations have continued to reinvent him, from the portal-sword-wielding slacker in Rise of the TMNT to a modern teenager in Mutant Mayhem and a solitary samurai wanderer in Jason Aaron's 2024 comic relaunch.
Da Collezione
For action figure collectors and statue enthusiasts, Leonardo remains one of the most sought-after characters in pop culture merchandising. The legacy began in 1988 with Playmates Toys' original action figure line, which produced iconic variants throughout the 1990s such as Giant Turtles Leonardo, Leo the Sewer Samurai (1990), Movie Star Leo (1991), and Mutatin' Leonardo (1992). Holy grails from this early era include unreleased prototypes like Savage Leo with Sewer Warcat and Camo-Armor Turtleflage Leonardo, alongside rare releases like the 1991 5th Anniversary Collector's Turtle.
In the modern collecting scene, high-end toy manufacturers have elevated Leonardo to premier collectible status. NECA leads the market with hyper-articulated figures accurately replicating his appearances from the 1984 Mirage comics, the 1987 cartoon, and the 1990 live-action movie. Mezco Toyz offers premium fabric-suited figures through their One:12 Collective Deluxe Boxed Sets, while Super7 produces oversized Ultimates figures. For high-end display statues, Iron Studios produces breathtaking statues such as the Art Scale Movie Leonardo and Leonardo Unleashed, while Youtooz and Jada Toys cater to vinyl and die-cast collectors.

In the 2018 animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo starts off wielding magic Ōdachi portal swords as a witty slacker while Raphael initially leads the group.
