Cronologia
Biografia
Kabal is an anti-hero and warrior within the Mortal Kombat universe defined by his dual hookswords, respirator life-support system, and superhuman speed. First introduced as a survivor of Shao Kahn's extermination squads, his body was horribly disfigured during the Outworld invasion, forcing him to rely on artificial breathing equipment and a helmet mask to survive.
Despite his terrifying appearance, Kabal initially fought alongside Earthrealm's champions to protect his realm from total conquest. Throughout his history, Kabal's loyalties have continually shifted. He started as a ruthless mercenary in Kano's Black Dragon crime syndicate before temporarily abandoning crime to join the New York Police Department alongside partner Kurtis Stryker.
However, after being killed in battle and resurrected by the sorcerer Quan Chi, Kabal became an undead Revenant serving Netherrealm under Shinnok, and later Liu Kang and Kitana. Whether fighting as a rogue mercenary, an Earthrealm defender, or a resurrected undead servant, Kabal is a level-headed yet ruthless opponent. His blinding speed—granted by exposure to Outworld's magic-heavy atmosphere—and mastery over his hookswords make him a force to be reckoned with across timelines.
Storia
In the original timeline, Kabal was a former member of the Black Dragon crime syndicate who chose to reform his life and defend Earthrealm.
During Shao Kahn's invasion, he was hunted down and severely burned by Kahn's extermination squads, surviving only by donning a complex respirator system and mask.
In the Mortal Kombat (2011) reboot timeline, his origin was revised: he served as an NYPD police officer alongside Kurtis Stryker. During the invasion of Earthrealm, Kabal was severely burned by the Shokan warrior Kintaro. Kano rescued his former comrade, equipping him with artificial lungs and a respirator before Kabal turned back to Earthrealm's cause. In Mortal Kombat 11, his history received another retcon, depicting him as a corrupt police officer who accepted bribes from Kano to join the Black Dragon.

Evoluzione
Kabal's character design and gameplay underwent significant evolution over the decades. Originally envisioned under the development name 'Sandman' with wrist-mounted buzzsaw blades, developers shifted his weapon to twin hookswords—which were initially created during pre-production for Baraka in Mortal Kombat II. In the 2D era of Mortal Kombat 3, hardware limitations prevented Midway from rendering Kabal's full original costume design.
It was not until Mortal Kombat: Deception in 3D that developers built his full model featuring his long trench coat and backpack from scratch. Narratively, Kabal evolved from an evil Black Dragon outlaw seeking redemption into a heroic NYPD police officer in Mortal Kombat (2011), before dying and transforming into a demonic Netherrealm Revenant. Mortal Kombat 11 re-contextualized his origin once more, depicting his past unburned self as a corrupt officer bribed by Kano, demonstrating the fluid and shifting nature of his allegiances throughout Mortal Kombat history.
Da Collezione
In collectible history, Kabal's iconic gear dates back to 1995, when a line of Mortal Kombat action figures based on 3.75-inch G.I. Joe figure molds hit the market.
Notably, Kabal's signature hookswords were packaged as generic accessory weapons across select character figures in this vintage line. In modern digital platforms, Kabal remains a sought-after character collectible in Mortal Kombat Mobile, featuring highly coveted card variations such as 'Black Dragon Kabal' and 'MK11 Kabal'.

In Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Kano explicitly compares Kabal's speed to DC Comics' speedster The Flash.
