Cronologia
Biografia
John 'Johnny' Lawrence is one of the central figures of The Karate Kid media franchise, created by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen and portrayed by William Zabka.
Introduced in the original 1984 film The Karate Kid, Johnny begins as the star student of the Cobra Kai dojo and a two-time All-Valley Under-18 Karate Champion (1982, 1983). After losing the 1984 tournament finals to newcomer Daniel LaRusso, Johnny's life spirals downward into decades of personal failure and isolation.
Thirty-four years later in the series Cobra Kai (2018–2025), Johnny works as an unemployed handyman in Reseda before reopening the Cobra Kai dojo to mentor his teenage neighbor, Miguel Diaz. Over the course of six seasons, Johnny establishes Eagle Fang Karate, joins forces with Daniel's Miyagi-Do dojo, and transforms from a bitter ex-bully into a compassionate sensei, father, husband, and global Sekai Taikai champion, concluding his arc with a cameo in Karate Kid: Legends (2025).
Storia
Johnny Lawrence was born on August 20, 1967, in Encino Hills, California. Abandoned by his biological father in kindergarten, he was raised by his mother, Laura Lawrence, and later his stepfather, Sid Weinberg, a wealthy executive TV producer for Lorimar Television.
Sid was verbally and emotionally abusive, causing Johnny to retreat into isolation and listen to his Walkman to escape home conflicts. In 1979, at age 12, Johnny discovered the Cobra Kai dojo and enrolled under Sensei John Kreese.
Kreese became a surrogate father figure to Johnny, instilling an aggressive 'No Mercy' philosophy. Johnny won back-to-back All-Valley Championships in 1982 and 1983. However, after losing to Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 tournament, Kreese physically assaulted Johnny and broke his trophy in the parking lot, prompting Johnny and his friends to quit Cobra Kai. Johnny spent the next three decades in a cycle of heavy drinking, odd jobs, and estrangement from his son Robby Keene.

Evoluzione
Johnny Lawrence's arc spans over four decades, evolving from a ruthless teenage bully into a dedicated father, mentor, and husband. In 1984, under John Kreese's influence, Johnny measured his worth through aggressive dominance. His defeat by Daniel LaRusso and Kreese's subsequent chokehold attack shattered his trust in authority and stalled his personal growth for over thirty years.
Reopening Cobra Kai in 2017 initially stems from nostalgia, but training Miguel Diaz awakens a genuine sense of purpose. Realizing the psychological harm of Kreese's 'No Mercy' mentality, Johnny splits away to create Eagle Fang Karate, teaching toughness tempered with honor. By reconciling with his biological son Robby, supporting Miguel, uniting with Daniel LaRusso, and marrying Carmen Diaz, Johnny completely overcomes his past trauma and achieves redemption as a Sekai Taikai world champion.

Johnny attended community college to study science but was expelled after accidentally starting a fire.
