Biography

Jessica Drew is the original Spider-Woman of the mainstream Marvel Universe (Earth-616). Born in London, her life was dramatically altered in childhood when exposure to uranium forced her father to inject her with an experimental spider serum. After decades spent in stasis, she emerged with incredible superhuman powers, including super-strength, wall-crawling, and bio-electric venom blasts.
Initially manipulated by the terrorist organization HYDRA into serving as a brainwashed assassin, Jessica rebelled after refusing to kill S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. Choosing to harness her abilities for justice, she built a career as a private detective, bounty hunter, and covert spy.
Over her extensive career, she has held key operational roles in S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., the New Avengers, and the multiversal Spider-Army. Despite enduring severe personal tragedy—including having her identity stolen by Skrull Queen Veranke during Secret Invasion—Jessica repeatedly reclaimed her life. In recent years, she stepped back from cosmic team-ups to focus on street-level detective work while raising her son, Gerry, proving herself as both a formidable hero and a devoted mother.
Origin & Backstory

Jessica Drew was born in London to atomic researcher Jonathan Drew and Merriam Drew. During her early childhood, her family moved to Mount Wundagore in Transia to build a research facility alongside geneticist Herbert Wyndham (later known as the High Evolutionary). Tragedy struck when young Jessica suffered fatal uranium poisoning from the radiation present on their property.
To save her life, Jonathan Drew injected his daughter with an untested serum derived from spider blood and placed her inside a genetic accelerator created by Wyndham. She remained in stasis for decades, aging at a vastly slowed rate while her genome fused with arachnid DNA. Waking as an adult with no memory of her past, Jessica inadvertently killed her first boyfriend during a panic-induced bio-electric outburst.
Fleeing an enraged local mob, she fell directly into the clutches of Otto Vermis, a high-ranking leader of HYDRA. HYDRA brainwashed Jessica, using Mentallo to alter her memories and Taskmaster to train her in martial arts and killing techniques. Believing HYDRA was a force fighting corporate evil, she accepted her first field mission: assassinating Nick Fury. However, Jessica refused to complete the hit, turned against HYDRA, and killed Vermis, embarking on a lifelong quest to rediscover her true identity.

Character Evolution
Jessica Drew's creation in 1977 by Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin was initially marked by an unusual origin claiming she was a spider evolved into human form. Writer Marv Wolfman quickly revised this backstory to make her a mutated human, launching her first 50-issue ongoing comic series in 1978 and establishing her distinctly from Spider-Man. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jessica's powers fluctuated, leading her to work as a private investigator in San Francisco and Madripoor alongside Wolverine.
When writer Brian Michael Bendis planned his 2001 comic series Alias, he originally intended to star Jessica Drew; editorial restrictions led him to create Jessica Jones instead, heavily modeling Jones on Drew's career as a private eye. Bendis revitalized Jessica in 2005 by placing her in New Avengers, followed by the dramatic Secret Invasion storyline where it was revealed Skrull Queen Veranke had stolen her identity. Following her rescue, Jessica evolved from a troubled espionage agent into a grounded street-level hero. Dennis Hopeless's 2014 run introduced a sleek tactical redesign by Kris Anka and featured Jessica becoming a mother to her son, Gerry. In 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse modernized her image further, reimagining her as a pregnant, Black, motorcycle-riding commander.
