The Jedi Order was an ancient organization of Force-sensitive peacekeepers dedicated to maintaining peace, justice, and harmony throughout the galaxy. Historically based in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the Order operated under four distinct governing bodies: the Jedi High Council (a twelve-member body of Jedi Masters chaired by a Grand Master), the Council of First Knowledge, the Council of Reconciliation, and the Council of Reassignment.
Though their ultimate allegiance lay with the Galactic Senate, the Jedi were granted full autonomy to govern their internal affairs. Throughout galactic history, Jedi Knights and Masters served as scholars, diplomats, and guardians. During major conflicts such as the Clone Wars, Jedi were called upon to serve as generals and commanders of the Grand Army of the Republic.
This military involvement culminated in tragic betrayal when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine executed Order 66, branding the Jedi as traitors and causing clone troopers to execute their commanders across the galaxy. Following the near-extinction of the Order during the reign of the Galactic Empire, surviving Jedi such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master Yoda, Kanan Jarrus, and Cal Kestis preserved the Order's teachings in secret.
