Biography

Jason Peter 'Jay' Garrick is the original speedster superhero known as The Flash. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, Jay first dashed onto the scene in 1939, quickly becoming a cornerstone of DC Comics lore.
Beyond his individual heroics, Jay holds the distinction of being a founding member and the first chairman of the Justice Society of America (JSA), comic book history's very first superhero team.
Throughout his long heroic career, Jay has filled the essential role of patriarch and elder statesman within the superhero community. Alongside his devoted wife, Joan Williams Garrick, Jay provides guidance, wisdom, and leadership to successive generations of speedsters, including Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen. Recently, Jay reunited with his long-lost daughter, Judy Garrick (known as 'Boom'), further expanding his legacy as both a dedicated family man and a tireless defender of justice.
Origin & History

Jay Garrick's path to super-speed began at Midwestern University, where he was a dedicated chemistry student. During a late-night laboratory experiment, Jay accidentally knocked over a vessel of heavy water vapors and fell asleep, inhaling the fumes for hours.
Upon waking, he discovered that the accidental exposure had altered his physiology, granting him superhuman velocity, lightning-fast reflexes, and accelerated healing capabilities. Choosing to use his newfound powers for good, Jay fashioned a unique costume inspired by the Roman messenger god Mercury.
He adopted a red long-sleeved shirt with a bold yellow lightning bolt across the chest, blue trousers, and his father's World War I Brodie helmet adorned with metal wings. While his origins were initially rooted in physical mutation, later retrospective stories linked Jay directly to the Speed Force, establishing him as one of its primary conduit guardians.

Character Evolution
Jay Garrick's character journey reflects the evolution of American superhero comics itself. Debuting in Flash Comics #1 in 1939 and leading the Justice Society of America throughout the 1940s, Jay anchored the Golden Age of comics until superhero publication slumps led to All-Star Comics ending in 1951. Ten years later, Jay made a historic comeback in 1961's The Flash #123 ('Flash of Two Worlds'). Meeting Silver Age Flash Barry Allen established Earth-Two and introduced the Multiverse concept to DC Comics.
Following Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, Earth-Two merged into Prime Earth, integrating Jay into mainstream history. In Geoff Johns' acclaimed JSA runs during the 2000s, Jay evolved into the revered elder mentor of the DC Universe. Though briefly reimagined in Earth 2 during DC's New 52, his classic history was restored in DC Rebirth and Doomsday Clock. Recent storylines in Stargirl: The Lost Children and his 2023–2024 solo miniseries added a new dynamic by introducing his long-lost daughter Judy ('Boom'), cementing Jay's modern role as both a veteran hero and active father.
Collectibles & Merchandise
For DC collectibles enthusiasts, Jay Garrick represents the bedrock of speedster history. His distinct Golden Age aesthetic—highlighted by the iconic winged metallic Brodie helmet, bold red sweater with yellow bolt insignia, and blue trousers—makes his figures standout centerpieces in any Justice Society or Flash Family shelf arrangement. Over the years, several major manufacturers have captured Jay Garrick in figure form.
DC Direct (and later DC Collectibles) produced classic comic-accurate action figures and statues celebrating his JSA appearances. McFarlane Toys has significantly expanded his presence in the modern collector market through their 7-inch DC Multiverse line, featuring both classic comic renditions and TV/video game variants such as his Injustice 2 appearance. For brick fans, LEGO has featured Jay Garrick in physical and digital formats. Collectors particularly hunt for figures featuring metallic finishes on his winged helmet and detailed dynamic running poses, making Jay Garrick figures a prized grail for fans building complete Flash Family speedster displays.

In 2022, DC lore introduced Judy Garrick ('Boom'), revealing Jay and Joan had a sidekick daughter erased from time.
