Cronologia
Biografia

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is one of Marvel's most pivotal characters, famously serving as Steve Rogers' loyal best friend and military partner. Introduced during World War II, Bucky fought alongside Captain America in the Howling Commandos, the Invaders, and the Young Allies.
Believed to have perished in 1945 during a perilous mission to disarm an experimental drone plane, he was secretly recovered, fitted with a bionic arm, and brainwashed by Soviet intelligence to become the covert assassin known as the Winter Soldier.
Stored in cryogenic sleep between clandestine missions for decades, Bucky eventually had his true memories restored by Steve Rogers using the Cosmic Cube. He subsequently embarked on a long path toward redemption, wielding the shield as Captain America following Steve's temporary absence, leading the Thunderbolts, and acting as Earth's secret outer-space guardian. Portrayed by Sebastian Stan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bucky's journey is defined by his struggle with trauma, his quest for atonement, and his unyielding loyalty to his allies.
Storia

Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Bucky Barnes made his debut in Captain America Comics #1 in March 1941. In his original Golden Age origins, Bucky was an army camp mascot who accidentally discovered Steve Rogers' secret identity and became his teenage partner in World War II.
In the closing days of the war in 1945, Bucky was caught in a mid-air explosion while attempting to disarm an experimental plane, resulting in his presumed death for nearly four decades. In 2004, writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting dramatically updated his history in Captain America (vol. 5).
They revealed that Soviet forces had salvaged Bucky's frozen, amnesiac body from the sea. Rebuilding him with a cybernetic left arm and conditioning him through secret programming, they forged the Winter Soldier. In contrast, in the alternate Earth-1610 (Ultimate Marvel) universe, Bucky was a WWII press photographer who survived the war, chain-smoked, married Rogers' former fiancée Gail, and lived to old age without ever becoming an assassin.

Evoluzione
Bucky Barnes has undergone one of the most drastic character evolutions in comic history. Originating in 1941 as a cheery teenage camp mascot and sidekick to Captain America, Bucky embodied the youthful optimism of WWII propaganda. For decades, his tragic demise in 1945 served as a fixed pillar of Steve Rogers' guilt and grief.
His character was completely transformed in 2004 when writer Ed Brubaker reintroduced him as the Winter Soldier—a brainwashed, cold-blooded Soviet assassin fitted with a cybernetic arm. This transition introduced rich psychological complexity focused on trauma and redemption. Upon regaining his memories, Bucky inherited the Captain America mantle, became Earth's secret cosmic guardian as "The Man on the Wall," directed the Thunderbolts, and assumed the political alias "Revolution." Simultaneously, his MCU journey mirrored this arc, carrying him from a WWII sergeant to a brainwashed Hydra weapon, Wakanda's "White Wolf," and the field leader of the Thunderbolts.
Da Collezione
For collectors, Bucky Barnes offers a wide array of collectible forms across physical toys, digital card games, and interactive gaming media. In physical collectibles, LEGO has produced multiple minifigure variants across releases for Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Lego Marvel's Avengers, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2, capturing his classic WWII uniform, Winter Soldier tactical armor, and Captain America suit.
Interactive physical figures were also featured in the Disney Infinity 2.0 and 3.0 lines as collectible interactive figures and Team-Up power discs. In digital collecting, titles such as Marvel Future Fight, Marvel Snap, and Marvel Rivals showcase extensive costume variants ranging from his Golden Age military attire and Winter Soldier gear to his White Wolf, Revolution, and modern Thunderbolts film outfits, making Bucky a versatile staple for Marvel completists.

In the alternate Earth-1610 continuity, Bucky Barnes never became the Winter Soldier and instead grew old after marrying Steve Rogers' former fiancée.
